Adelphi University Defeats Chestnut Hill College in Three Sets

Garden City, N.Y. – (10/6/2018) – A brief break from their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule, Chestnut Hill College visited Adelphi University for this afternoon's competition. The Panthers proved superior in three sets as they used a .321 (38K-11E-84TA) team hitting percentage to defeat the Griffins, 3-0 (25-11, 25-12, 25-21). The Scarlet and Gold had their most success in the final set, where the defense forced nine Panther hitting errors and benefitted from eight service errors.

Adelphi University (15-4) hurried out to an 11-5 lead in the opening set, a position they improved to a 17-6 before the frame ended in their favor, 25-11 (1-0). The second set followed down a similar path as the Panthers established an 18-8 edge before defeating Chestnut Hill College (5-14) 25-12 for their second point (2-0). But in the third set, Adelphi University could not maintain their efficiency as mistakes allowed the Griffins to keep a narrow advantage until a 13-13 stalemate. The sea change permitted the Panthers to force a Scarlet and Gold timeout at 15-13 and remain a step ahead of Chestnut Hill College in a 25-21 (3-0) end.

Junior outside hitter Sara Bisbe (Barcelona, Spain) led Adelphi University with 12.5 points on nine kills, three aces, and a block assist. Sophomore middle blocker Sophia Powless (Onondaga Nation) was the other Panther to record double digit points, supplying 10.5 on five kills, four aces, and three block assists. Freshman setter Grace Wegmann (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) offered 22 assists in addition to a kill, two digs, and two block assists, while a balanced team defense totaled 41 digs and seven team blocks.

Freshman right side Lauren Lipinski (Gilbert, Ariz.) led Chestnut Hill College with seven points; she recorded six kills and an ace to do so. Senior setter Kennedy Sutton (Chesapeake, Va.) supplied the Griffin offense with 13 assists and two kills, while also recording three digs. Junior outside hitter Reily Byxbee (Madison, Conn.) was also a major contributor with five kills and eight digs.

Chestnut Hill College resumes their CACC schedule on Wednesday, October 9, when they visit Wilmington University for a 7:00 p.m. match.
