Trevonn Pitts (Wyncote, Pa.) carried Chestnut Hill College to a victory, both posting double-figures in points, during today's home opener against Queens College. The Griffins trailed their opponents by one in the first half, but they rallied together in the final six-minutes of the contest, ultimately overthrowing the Knights 62-55.
Queens College (0-4) controlled the early segment of the first half, but Pitts' nine-points aided in Chestnut Hill College (2-2) keeping a close enough grasp on the visiting team. The Griffins earned their largest lead of the half at 6:55 (22-18), but the Knights sinking five free-throws towards the end put them over by one, 26-27. At 14:03 of the second half, Queens College edged the Griffins by eight-points (33-41), but a series of consecutive buckets from Pitts and McWade tied the affair 41-41 (11:44). After, Chestnut Hill College broke the deadlock and gained control of the period. Despite the Knights' efforts, the turning point came at 6:31 when the Griffins went on an eight-point (3:47, 58-49) run that gave them a comfortable advantage. Their opponents gave it one last push cutting the lead to four points (59-55), with 1:23 left, but a free-throw from senior guard
Liban Awl (Manassas, Va.) followed by a fast-break slam dunk by freshman forward
Keyon Butler (Chester, Pa.) solidified the win.
Sophomore guard Elijah Bovell (Baldwin, N.Y.) led Queens College with 17-points (4REB, 1AST, 2STL) going 4-for-10 from the three-point line. The only other Knight to score in double figures was sophomore guard Dwayne Henry Jr. (Woodstock, N.Y.) who totaled 14 points (4REB, 2STL).
Pitts went 7-for-10 (.700) and 1-for-1 from the free-throw line in his journey to 15-points. He needed one more rebound (9) to record a double-double, while also adding three assists and two steals. McWade's last home performance was on January 14, 2017, against Post University due to an injury that carried into his 2018-2019 season as well. In today's homecoming performance McWade posted 14-points, five rebounds, and one assist. The third highest scorer of the night was Butler (9) and he also led the Scarlet and Gold in rebounds (12).
