Hawks Edge Griffins in NCAA DI Crossover

Princess Anne, Md. – (12/31/2018) – Chestnut Hill College concluded 2018 today, Monday, December 31, with an afternoon National Collegiate Atlantic Association (NCAA) Division I crossover at University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES). Freshman forward Amir Warrick (Washington, DC) scored 11 of his 13 points as a first half reserve, keeping the Griffins in the Hawks' back pocket, 38-32, for the opening 20 minutes. Unfortunately, the Hawks were able to separate by 16 points, 67-51 (2:09), and avoid a late barrage of Griffin three point baskets in a 68-62 final. Senior forward Ed McWade (Wildwood, N.J.) led the Griffins with 16 points, five rebounds, and an assist.

McWade's three pointer at 18:06 of the first half gave Chestnut Hill College (3-8) their only lead of the contest, 3-2. From there, the perimeter shooting of Warrick (2-of-2, 1.000 3PT) and Miller (2-of-2, 1.000 3PT) helped the Griffins keep pace with the Hawks' superior first half shooting effort (15-of-30, .500/10-of-24, .417). In the second half, the contest remained tight until UMES (2-13) issued a 16-4 run that delivered them a game-high 16-point, 67-51, advantage. This time junior guard Billy Miller VI (Pine Hill, N.J.) and headlined the Scarlet and Gold's reprisal, hitting his first three point basketball to knock the deficit to 13 points, 67-54 (1:50), and another to reduce it to single digits, 67-59 (0:35), before a McWade three pointer made the difference six points, 68-62, with 25 second (0:25) remaining. Regrettably, there was not enough time for Chestnut Hill College to complete the comeback as UMES escaped the fray with a six-point, 68-62, edge.

Junior forward Tyler Jones (Atlantic City, N.J.) led UMES with 19 points, seven rebounds, an assist, and a block. Two other finished in double figures as well with sophomore guard Colen Gaynor (Berlin, Md.) and junior forward Isaac Taylor (Wachapregue, Va.) scoring 12 points and 11 points, respectively.

McWade's season-high scoring effort came with a pair of free throws (2-of-6, .333) and six free throws (6-of-7, .857), while Warrick's included his two three pointers (2-of-2, 1.000) and three free throws (3-of-6, .500). Warrick also recorded four rebounds, two assists, a block, and three steals. Miller finished with 12 points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals.

Chestnut Hill College returns to their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule in the New Year; on Wednesday, January 2, when they visit Goldey-Beacom College for an 8:00 p.m. contest.
