Griffins Struggle To Find Shot In CACC Loss to #11 Devils

Philadelphia, Pa. – (12/8/2018) – Mired behind a 19.1% (9-of-47) shooting performance and 25 turnovers, Chestnut Hill College was unable to compete with the #11 University of the Sciences (USciences) in today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest. The Griffins and Devils were knotted, 10-10, at the end of the first quarter, but with only seven points in each of the three following quarters the Scarlet and Gold came up on the short end of the 66-31 final. Senior forward Jaeda Wildgoose (Somerset, N.J.) led Chestnut Hill College with nine points, eight rebounds, and an assist.

After taking a 5-1 lead on a three-point play from senior guard Mary Trossi (Somerset, N.J.) at 5:51, Chestnut Hill College (1-7, 0-1) allowed USciences (8-0, 2-0) to control the contest. The Devils hit three consecutive three point baskets (3:44, 3:35, 2:26), swinging the spread in their favor, 10-5, on the last. Fortunately, Wildgoose hit one of her two free throws at 2:10 to make it 10-6 and freshman center Leah Miller (Punxsutawney, Pa.) came off the bench for the final four Griffins points of the opening quarter, 10-10. USciences broke out of their funk first, scoring 13 straight points after Wildgoose's second quarter ice breaker, 12-10 (9:59), to lead 23-12 with 5:36 remaining in the second quarter. The Devils' first-half edge peaked at 14 points, 28-14, on a three pointer from sophomore guard Irisa Ye (North Wales, Pa.) with four minutes (4:11) remaining until intermission. Sophomore guard Cassie Sebold (Willow Grove, Pa.) answered with a step-back three, 28-17 (3:38), but the Scarlet and Gold did not score the rest of the period and therefore trailed 30-17 at halftime.

USciences increased their advantage to more than 20 points, 38-17, on a three point basket from senior guard Alex Thomas (Hockessin, Del.) at 7:15 and the difference grew to as many as 27 points, 47-20, later in the third quarter (2:56). Wildgoose and Sebold did what they could to try to stop the bleeding, but in the Devils continued to improve their position, leading by 25 points, 49-24, at the end of the third quarter and 35 points, 66-31, at game's end.

Ye was the Devils top performer with 19 points, six rebounds, an assist, a block, and a steal. Graduate forward Colleen Walsh (Downingtown, Pa.) offered 18 points, a rebound, an assist, and a steal as her compliment. Thomas was a factor as well with nine points, six rebounds, three assists, a block, and a steal.

Wildgoose hit a third (3-of-9, .333) of Chestnut Hill College's nine field goals (9-of-47, .191) and added three free throws (3-of-4, .750) to match Sebold's nine points. Sebold also recorded four rebounds, an assist, and a block. Miller and freshman guard Abbey Spratt (Doylestown, Pa.) provided the relief off the Griffin bench; the former totaled four points, two rebounds, and two blocks, while the latter recorded two points, three rebounds, and two blocks.

Chestnut Hill College briefly breaks from their CACC schedule to host Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) 1:00 p.m. contest on Saturday, November 15.
