Box Score Newark, Del. - (2/13/2018) – Despite an off shooting night (4-of-11, .364), senior guard
Demetrius Isaac (Philadelphia, Pa.) tied the contest at 77-77 and provided junior guard
Liban Awl (Manassas, Va.) the opportunity to score the game-winning free throws (79-77, 0:34) in a 79-77 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory over Wilmington University. Behind Awl and senior center
Chris Evans (Norristown, Pa.), Chestnut Hill College carried a 41-36 edge at intermission. Following the break, Isaac and the grit of junior forward
Tony Toplyn Jr. (Sicklerville, N.J.) took over; the latter offered a career night with 18 points, nine rebounds, an assist, and his third straight game with four blocks.
Chestnut Hill College (5-18, 4-12) led most of the way and by as many as 13 points, 41-28, late (2:15) in the first half. Unfortunately, Wilmington University (14-11, 9-7) mustered a closing rally and cut the Griffin advantage to five points, 41-36 (0:29) by halftime. Awl provided a huge lift off the Scarlet and Gold bench, hitting all four (4-of-4, 1.000) of his three point shots and leading the Griffins at halftime with 14 points. Evans scored a dozen (12) points in the frame.
In the second half, Toplyn did all he could to keep Chestnut Hill College ahead until the Wildcats clawed their way to a 55-53 advantage at 10:27. Wilmington University carried that edge to a nine-point, 66-57 (7:08), lead before a Toplyn and-one (66-60, 6:40) pushed the momentum in the Griffins' favor. Three minutes later (3:15), Isaac hit the go-ahead jumper, 71-70, and scored six points of the Scarlet and Gold's last eight points in a 79-77 victory.
Wilmington University was led by a trio of Wildcats; sophomore guard Jermaine Head (Edgewood, Md.) led with 26 points, seven rebounds, eight assists, and two steals, but was well supported by 21 points, seven rebounds, an assist, and five steals from senior guard Shawn Church (Darby, Pa.) and a 17-point, 14-rebound double-double from sophomore forward Miles Gillette (Washington, DC).
In support of Toplyn's tireless play, Awl scored 20 of the Griffins' 26 bench points. He was 7-of-12 (.583) from the field, 4-of-6 (.667) from three, and 2-of-4 (.500) at the free throw line, while recording three rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Evans finished with 19 points and five rebounds, while Isaac totaled 10 points in excess of four rebounds and seven assists.
The Chestnut Hill College men's basketball team resumes CACC play on Saturday, February 17, when they visit Felician University for a 3:00 p.m. contest.
