Holy Family University Endures Chestnut Hill College in 75-69 CACC Score

Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (2/21/2018) – Tonight's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men's basketball game was the mirror image of the preceding women's game as Chestnut Hill College held a hot hand in the first half (17-of-23, .739), but lost an arduous second half battle in a 75-69 Holy Family University win. Each side placed four players in double figures; junior guard Liban Awl (Manassas, Va.) led the Scarlet and Gold contingent with 15 points in excess of his six rebounds and two assists.
 
Chestnut Hill College (5-20, 4-14) emerged from the early back-and-forth with a trio of trifecta's from junior guard Cartier Talford (Reading, Pa.) (21-15, 13:13), Awl (24-17, 12:22), and senior guard Demetrius Isaac (Philadelphia, Pa.) putting the Griffins up by 10 points, 27-17, with 11:50 remaining in the first half. But less than five minutes later (7:09), Holy Family University (4-22, 3-15) tied the contest at 33-33 and briefly held an advantage (36-33, 6:02), before Talford inspired the Scarlet and Gold to a 45-42 halftime lead.
 
In the second half, the Griffins paced the Tigers to a 51-51 (13:28) stalemate. But, Holy Family University controlled the next stanza, building a 64-54 (9:28) edge before Awl and junior forward Tony Toplyn Jr. (Sicklerville, N.J.) triggered Chestnut Hill College's last hurrah. Awl knocked the Tiger lead to three points, 64-61, with a string of free throws that ended at 6:49 and again with a fastbreak layup at 2:22 (70-67). Toplyn did all the dirty work in between, but it was not enough to tackles the Tigers in a 75-69 end.
 
Sophomore guard Maliq Sanders (Voorhees, N.J.) led Holy Family University with 22 points, seven rebounds, three assists, a block, and three steals. Sophomore forward Sean Griffin (Abington, Pa.) provided plenty of help off the Tiger bench with 19 points, seven rebounds, three assists, a block, and three steals. Junior guard Mekhi Bryant (Fairless Hills, Pa.) match his defensive output (1 block, 3 steals) in addition to 11 points, three rebounds, and five assists. Freshman guard Terrell Jones (Ardmore, Pa.) was the fourth Tiger in double figures with 11 points in addition to three rebounds and an assist.

Aside from Awl, Toplyn totaled 13 points, eight rebounds, and three assists, while junior forward Roman Letterlough (Harrisburg, Pa.) and senior center Chris Evans (Norristown, Pa.) scored 10 points apiece. Letterlough added five rebounds and an assist to his double digit score. Evans added two rebounds, three assists, and a block to his. Talford totaled nine points.
 
The Chestnut Hill College men's basketball team will conclude their season on Saturday, February 24, when they host CACC rival, the University of the Sciences (Usciences) in a 3:00 p.m. Senior Day contest.
