Scarlet and Gold Open Season with 3-1 Victory at Shippensburg University

Shippensburg, Pa. – (8/30/2018) – Senior midfielder Tales Domingues (Saó Paulo, Brazil) played the point in tonight's 3-1 season-opening win at Shippensburg University, locating fellow senior, forward Jason Burns (Reading, Pa.) for the game's first goal at 53:26 and later finding the head of junior midfielder Pedro Dutra (Passos, Brazil) for the third Griffin goal (89:22). A last-second (89:59) penalty kick allowed the Raiders to break the shutout as sophomore goalkeeper Sergio Hernandez (Ossining, N.Y.) earned his first collegiate win with eight saves.

The match was evenly played throughout with Shippensburg University (0-1) holding a slight 8-6 shot advantage and a 4-1 corner kick edge in the opening 45 minutes. After intermission, play followed the established theme, but at 53:26 a Raider turnover allowed a quick exchange from Domingues to Burns to beat junior goalkeeper Garret Watson (Benton, Pa.) for the contest's first tally, 1-0. Chestnut Hill College (1-0) sustained their advantage over the next 27 minutes and added to it at 80:34, when sophomore forward Miguel Marra (Ossining, N.Y.) finished a jumbled cross, 2-0. Nine minutes later (89:22), the Scarlet and Gold lead grew again as Domingues served a restart to a successful Dutra header, pushing the advantage to 3-0. A late card gave the Raiders the opportunity for their last-second score.

The Raiders' converted penalty kick was provided by senior forward Cole Kropnick (Blue Bell, Pa.), who led the home team with six shots. Watson (0-1) made six saves in the loss.

In addition to his two assists, Domingues provided a team-high four shots. Burns and Dutra finished with three shots apiece. Hernandez (1-0) totaled eight saves and got help from his defense, which accounted for the additional Griffin save.

Chestnut Hill College continues their season on Saturday, September 1, when they visit Southern New Hampshire University (SHNU) for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
