Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Wildgoose Scores Groundbreaking Basket, But Griffins Lose to Lightning

Wilmington, Del. – (1/2/2019) – Just 1:41 after the opening tip-off (6-5, 7:19 1QTR), senior forward Jaeda Wildgoose (Somerset, N.J.) made Chestnut Hill College women's basketball history establishing herself as the program's all-time leading scorer (Ruairi Sullivan '00, 1,277 points) with the 1,278th point of her collegiate career. Unfortunately, the accomplishment served as the background to a 71-66 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) loss at Goldey-Beacom College. The Lightning gradually grew a 15-point, 29-14, by the first-quarter break and led the Griffins by 11 points, 43-32, at halftime, before a late fourth-quarter Scarlet and Gold rally brought final deficit to a respectable margin.

Unfortunately for Chestnut Hill College (2-9, 0-3), Wildgoose's historic basket was followed by a 7-0 Goldey-Beacom College (6-7, 2-2) run that put the home team up 13-5 midway through the first quarter (5:31). With a late flurry of scoring, the Lightning extended their lead to 15 points, 29-14, by the end of the opening frame. In the second quarter, the deficit maxed out at 19 points, 38-19, on a three pointer from freshman guard Sarah Round (Northampton, England) just past the six-minute mark (5:54). Luckily, a string of Scarlet and Gold offensive rebounds and free throws slowly returned the difference single digits, 39-30, before the two-minute mark (2:02) and 11 points, 41-30,  for halftime.

The second half offered no relief for the Griffins, who fell behind by 20 points, 63-33, in the final minute of the third quarter (0:33). Freshman guard Lauren Crim (Warrington, Pa.) and sophomore guard Cassie Sebold (Willow Grove, Pa.) issued Chestnut Hill College's fourth quarter rally, returning the Scarlet and Gold to a nine-point, 65-56, trail with 5:50 remaining in the game. The difference remained there with three minutes to play, 68-59 (2:59), but closed to just two points, 68-66, by the one-minute mark (1:04) thanks to a free throw from freshman forward Bri Hewlett (North Wales, Pa.) (68-60, 2:14) and a pair of Crim three pointers (1:37, 1:04). Unfortunately, Chestnut Hill College missed their opportunity to tie the contest, allowing the Lightning to recuperate their stronghold with concluding free throws.

Sophomore forward Alanna Speaks (Dover, Del.) was one of three Lightning to score in double figures and led Goldey-Beacom College with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Junior guard Amanda McGrogan (Mount Laurel, N.J.) and freshman forward Alexis Harrison (Millville, N.J.) both recorded 15 points; the former also offered seven rebounds, four assists, and a steal, while the latter additionally contributed six rebounds and three blocks. Round totaled eight points, three assists, a block, and two steals.

Crim (5-of-9, .556) and Sebold (3-of-4, .750) hit eight of the Griffins' nine (9-of-20, .450) three point baskets; the former added two rebounds, two assists, and a steal, while the latter also recorded two rebounds, four assists, and a steal. Wildgoose offered eight points, five rebounds, a block, and a steal.

Chestnut Hill College continues their CACC schedule on Saturday, January 5, with a 1:00 p.m. contest at Dominican College.
