Philadelphia, Pa. – (1/27/2019) - Anchored by a 14-point, 17-rebound double-double from freshman center
Leah Miller (Punxsutawney, Pa.), Chestnut Hill College weathered a lackluster shooting performance (20-of-63, .317) and 22 turnovers in today's 62-51 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory over Concordia College (NY). Fortunately, the Scarlet and Gold defense gave the Clippers just as much trouble, holding the visitors to a 26.6% (21-of-79) field goal performance and limiting them to just eight free throws (5-of-8, .625). Miller hit 8-of-10 (.800) from the free throw line, headlining the Griffins' 16-of-20 (.800) showing at the charity stripe.
The inside-out combination for freshman guard
Lauren Crim (Warrington, Pa.) and Miller kept Chestnut Hill College (5-12, 3-6) a few steps ahead of Concordia College (NY) (4-15, 2-8) in the early going as Crim's third bucket of the first quarter gave the Griffins their largest lead of the opening frame, 17-8 (2:21). Unfortunately, the Clippers scored the last two baskets of the period to cut the difference to just four points, 17-13 (0:26), by the break. At the start of the second quarter, a three from junior forward
Shannon Glenn (Philadelphia, Pa.) (20-13, 9:06) and a pair of free throws from Miller (22-13, 8:10) reestablished the Scarlet and Gold's nine-point, 22-13, edge. The following layup from senior forward
Jaeda Wildgoose (Franklin Township, N.J.) pushed the margin to double digits, 24-13 (7:36), but Concordia College was not intimidated, cutting the spread to five points, 29-24 (3:39), on a three pointer from freshman guard Rhona McCaughey (Maspeth, N.Y.) and leaving it there for halftime with the first of her two free throws at 1:13, 35-30.
Turnovers continued to hinder the Griffins' progress in the second half, allowing the Clippers to keep the difference to single digits and eventually pull back within two points, 46-44 (1:27) before the fourth quarter break. An layup from sophomore guard Cameron Corbett (Staten Island, N.Y.) tied the contest early, 46-46 (9:40), but Miller worked herself to the free throw line at the beginning (48-46, 9:19) and end (50-46, 5:58) of three scoreless minutes to give Chestnut Hill College a 50-46 lead heading to the closing minutes. There, Concordia College first narrowed the gap to two points, 53-51 (2:53), before perimeter baskets from freshman guard
Morgan Orloski (Bethlehem, Pa.) (56-51, 2:19) and sophomore guard
Cassie Sebold (Willow Grove, Pa.) (59-51, 0:59) provided the Scarlet and Gold with the necessary insurance for an 11-point, 62-51, triumph.
Sophomore forward Sabrina Clement (Queens. N.Y.) headlined the Clippers' starting five with six points, 13 rebounds, a block, and a steal, but it was junior center Amiya Rankins (Somerset. N.J.), who came off the bench for a team-high 12 points. McCaughey and Corbett finished with nine points apiece; the latter also recorded three rebounds, three assists, and a steal.
Miller was one of three Griffins to score in double figures, needing only three field goals (3-of-6, .500) and her eight free throws to reach her season-high point total of 14 points. She also reached season-highs in rebounds (17) and blocks (3), in addition to an assist and a steal. Sebold offered 12 points, five rebounds, four assists, and a steal, while Wildgoose contributed 10 points, seven rebounds, an assist, and two blocks. Crimm and Glenn each totaled nine points; the latter scored all of hers from long range (3-of-5, .600 3PT) and grabbed eight rebounds in the Griffins' superior effort on the glass (57-47).
Chestnut Hill College returns to Sorgenti Arena on Wednesday, January 30, when they host Goldey-Beacom College in a 6:00 p.m. CACC contest.
