Corrine Kalala (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) hit .355 (16K-5E-31TA) to score 16 kills in just three sets, but Chestnut Hill College had trouble gaining the edge on Bloomfield College who ended today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) early with set wins of 25-21, 27-25, 25-23; 3-0. Senior outside hitter Danielle Quintanar (El Paso, Texas) led Bloomfield College with a match-high 25.0 points; 21 kills, three aces, and a pair of block assists.
An early 5-1 lead gave Bloomfield College (9-6, 6-3) all the separation they would need to pace Chestnut Hill College (9-10, 6-5) to a 25-21 end in the first set. The Griffins grabbed the early edge in the second set, sporting a 6-0 advantage after a third straight Kalala kill. Unfortunately, the Scarlet and Gold could not hold their lead as they allowed the Bears to tie the set at 14-14, before reestablishing a slight edge, 22-20, down the home stretch. Following a timeout, Bloomfield College rallied one last time, using a pair of Quintanar kills to spark a 7-3 closing run; 27-25. Determined to get on the scoreboard, Chestnut Hill College opened the third set with six straight points on the serve of freshman setter
Henielys Ramos (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico). Similar to the second set, the Bears gradually closed the gap and tied the frame again at 14-14. But this time, the Griffins could not recover as Bloomfield College carried their momentum to a 25-23 win.
Quintanar added an assist and nine digs to her 25.0 points. Her teammates also hit well off the feed of senior setter Juliette Tygret (Gilbert, Ariz.) as Bloomfield College hit .243 (45K-17E-115TA) thanks in part to her 35 assists. She also recorded four aces, six digs, a solo block, and two block assists.
Kalala provided three digs in excess of her 16-point effort. Ramos also totaled double digit points for Chestnut Hill College with eight kills and two aces. She additionally recorded 19 assists and eight digs. Senior right side
Cassie Callahan (St. Louis, Mo.) contributed one kill, 10 assists, four digs, and three block assists, while senior outside hitter
Reily Byxbee (Madison, Conn.) offered five kills, an assist, three aces, 11 digs, and three block assists to the Scarlet and Gold's performance.
Chestnut Hill College continues their CACC schedule on Tuesday, October 22, when they welcome Georgian Court University to Sorgenti Arena for a 7:00 p.m. match.
