Philadelphia, Pa. – (10/5/2019) – Touchdown passes from senior quarterback
Michael Marino (Blue Bell, Pa.) to freshman wide receiver
James Naylor Jr. (Middletown, Del.) (6-0, 10:51, 1QTR) and sophomore wide receiver
Akeem Browne (Elkins Park, Pa.) (14-6, 4:14, 1QTR) gave Chestnut Hill College a 14-6 first-quarter edge on the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) in today's Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) game. But a 22-6 second-quarter slide and a 26-0 second-half shutout surrendered the victory to the Quakers; 42-32. Marino kept the Griffins in the fight, connecting for a career-high five touchdowns and a career-high 336 yards on 25-of-42 (.595) passing. He hit six different receivers, finding Browne eight times for 104 yards and two touchdowns.
Chestnut Hill College (2-2, 0-2) scored on their first two drives. On the first, Marino shook off his first two incomplete passes with back-to-back completions to senior wide receiver
Domoree Hill (Bethlehem, Pa.) – good for 13 yards – and Browne. His 16-yard reception put the Griffins at the Penn (3-1, 1-0) 38-yard line. Another completion to sophomore wide receiver
Colby Goldsmith (Phoenixville, Pa.), a pair of gashes from senior running back
Sef Penson (Brooklyn, N.Y.), and a Hill fumble recovery brought the Scarlet and Gold to the 12-yard line. From there, Marino found Goldsmith (1 yard) and Naylor (11 yards, TD) to put the Griffins in the endzone; 6-0 (10:51, 1QTR). A quick score from Penn evened the score at 6-6 just two minutes later (8:14, 1QTR), but Chestnut Hill College responded, this time Marino hit Naylor (12 yards) and Browne (27 yards) to complete a 59-yard drive that ended with a two-point conversion from the latter pairing; 14-6 (3:51).
Unfortunately, the Griffins found little success following the first-quarter break as Penn scored on all three of their second-quarter possessions to overshadow a 34-yard connection between Marino and Naylor (21-20, 3:00, 2QTR). With a 28-20 edge at the end of the third quarter, the Quakers looked to put the Scarlet and Gold away. But Marino and the Griffins thought differently, as they marched 73 yards on 15 plays to find pay dirt with a 15-yard touchdown catch from Hill; 28-26 (7:23, 3QTR). Despite the score, Chestnut Hill College could not find an answer for sophomore running back Laquan McKeever (Linden, N.J.), who rushed for 81 yards on back-to-back possessions and scored on a 46-yard carry to separate the Quakers for a 42-32 victory.
Marino's arm accounted for most of the Griffins' offense as the Scarlet and Gold only found 60 yards on the ground. In addition to Browne, Marino found Goldsmith six times for 60 yards, Hill five times for 93 yards, Naylor four times for 65 yards, and Penson (8 yards) and freshman running back
Luis Rivera Turell (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) (6) once apiece. Junior defensive back
Rahsul Brown (Swedesboro, N.J.) led the Chestnut Hill College defense with eight solo tackles. Senior strong safety
Ryan Jakeman (Cheltenham, Pa.) recorded an interception and sacks were secured by junior
Marcel Mitchell (Mays Landing, N.J.) and freshman defensive back
Garrett Brown (Tuckerton, N.J.). Junior defensive back
Nate Moser (Bethlehem, Pa.) matched Browne in all-purpose yards with 104 yards on five kickoff returns (20.8 yards/return, 31 Long).
Following a bye week, Chestnut Hill College resumes their CSFL schedule on Friday, October 18, when they visit the South Division's newest member, Alderson Broaddus University for a 6:00 p.m. contest.
