Griffins Record Fifth Straight League Win With 3-1 Victory Over Rams

Philadelphia, Pa. - (10/8/2019) – Chestnut Hill College extended their recent four-game Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) winning streak to five matches with tonight's 3-1 (5-12, 25-18, 16-25, 25-21) triumph over South Division rival, Jefferson. The Griffins set the tone early, using an early 9-6 advantage to take the first set by a decisive 25-12 spread. Momentum carried to the second set as the Scarlet and Gold grabbed a 2-0 lead with a 25-18 win. The Lady Rams looked to get back into the contest with a strong third set, but their 25-16 win was not enough to derail a hot Chestnut Hill College squad that secured the league win with a 25-21 fourth-set final. Four Griffins finished the evening with double digit points; junior outside hitter Corrine Kalala (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) (12 kills, 2 block assists) and freshman setter Henielys Ramos (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) (12 kills, 1 ace), were the best among them with 13.0 points apiece.

The front court play of Ramos and senior right side Cassie Callahan (St. Louis, Mo.) got Chestnut Hill College (8-7, 5-2) going early as the Griffins paced Jefferson (9-7, 4-3) to an early timeout (9-6). But the break did help the Rams, who fell behind the Scarlet and Gold by as many as eight points, 17-9, before surrendering the set by a 25-12 margin. The second set was more competitive, but still favored the Griffins as Chestnut Hill College emerged from an 11-11 tie to force a Jefferson timeout at 19-14 before increasing their match-lead to 2-0 with a 25-18 win. Nevertheless, the Rams did not go down without a fight as they extended the match to a fourth set with their 25-16 win in the third frame. In the fourth set, the Scarlet and Gold owned a narrow advantage for a majority of play; the separation came after a 15-15 stalemate, when a series of kills from Ramos, Kalala, and junior middle hitter Ragen Baldwin (Lancaster, Pa.) pushed the Griffins out to a 23-16 edge. From there, it was only a matter of time before Chestnut Hill College secured the match with a 25-21 fourth-set final.

Like Chestnut Hill College, Jefferson also saw four players reach double digit points; junior middle hitter Logan Dontell (Red Lion, Pa.) was the leader among them with a match-high 13.5 points (10 kills, 7 block assists). Sophomore setter Molly Hand (Perkiomenville, Pa.) provided 38 assists, an ace, and 10 digs, while senior libero Alexis Leddy (Reading, Pa.) led three Rams in double digit digs with 18.

Kalala has recorded at least 10 points in each of Chestnut Hill College's last five wins. Ramos' 13-point performance served as part of her fifth triple-double of the season as she paired her dozen (12) kills and ace with 21 assists and 13 digs. Sophomore right side Lauren Lipinski (Gilbert, Ariz.) was the third Griffin to reach double digit points, recording 10 kills. Callahan supplied six kills, 23 assists, two aces, 12 digs, and a pair of block assists, while senior outside hitter Reily Byxbee (Madison, Conn.) headlined the Scarlet and Gold defense with a team-high 16 digs. She also provided eight kills, three assists, two aces, and a block assist.

Chestnut Hill College continues their CACC slate on Thursday, October 10, when they visit South Division rival, Wilmington University for a 7:00 p.m. match.
