PHILADELPHIA (11/10/19) – Chestnut Hill College rebounded from a tight loss in its season opener on Saturday to win its first game of the season – getting first-year head coach
Jim Connolly his inaugural win in the process -- against Queens College, 64-54. Double-figure efforts from three Griffins, including a 25-point outing from sophomore guard
Lauren Crim (Warrington, Pa.) and a double-double (12 points and 10 rebounds) from sophomore forward
Leah Miller (Punxsutawney, Pa.), powered the team past the Knights.
The Griffins (1-1) had a back-and-forth first half with Queens College (1-1), featuring 11 lead changes and five ties through that opening 20 minutes of play. Chestnut Hill College went into the break with a 32-29 lead and kept that three point lead with just a period to play thanks to the team draining four three-pointers in a 14-point third quarter. The Griffins pulled away on a 14-4 run at the beginning of the fourth quarter, featuring seven points from Miller and a pair of baskets from junior guard
Cassie Sebold (Willow Grove, Pa.), who finished with 11 points on the night. The Griffins held on to that lead down the stretch for their 64-54 win.
The Knights' leading scorers, freshman forward Raiana Brown (North Babylon, N.Y.) and junior guard Zorria West (Coram, N.Y.), both finished with 12 points. Freshman guard Brianne Moxley (Penfield, N.Y.) led the team with eight rebounds and four assists after playing the full 40 minutes.
The Griffins strength was on the boards, grabbing 38 rebounds, including 15 offensive rebounds for 13 second-chance points. Miller led the way with her 10 rebounds, while freshman forward
Lindsey Lane (Havertown, Pa.) made a big contribution with nine rebounds, four of which were offensive boards. Sophomore guard
Abbey Spratt (Doylestown, Pa.) dished out six assists to aid in the Chestnut Hill College scoring efforts. Crim was the recipient of some of those Spratt finds, knocking down five looks from beyond the arc. The Scarlet and Gold also got a solid contribution off the bench from sophomore guard
Rachael Millan (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.), who notched six points and six rebounds in her 17 minutes of action.
Chestnut Hill College will complete its three-game homestand at 6 p.m. on Thursday, November 14 against Millersville University.
