Bloomsburg, Pa. - (11/19/2019) – Chestnut Hill College only trailed Bloomsburg University by three points, 42-39, at halftime of tonight's contest. But the Huskies hot hand only improved in the second half (21-of-37, .568 FG/6-of-12, .500 3PT/11-of-14, .786 FT) and provided the home team the advantage they needed to dismiss the Griffins by a 101-88 measure. Four Griffins finished in double figures with a 24-point performance from
junior forward
Eli Barrett (Harrisburg, Pa.) and a 22-point effort from sophomore guard
James Rider IV (Baltimore, Md.) headlining the Scarlet and Gold's production.
Barrett and Rider took turns leading Chestnut Hill College (0-5) through a first half in which they paced Bloomsburg University (2-2) most of the way. Rider set up sophomore guard
Juston Bailey (Riverdale, Md.) for a three pointer at 17:09 that gave the Griffins an early 11-6 advantage. The bucket was enough keep the Scarlet and Gold in the driver's seat as they paced the Huskies to a 15-15 (11:04) tie and eventually opened a 10-point, 30-20 (6:28), lead with Bailey helping sophomore forward
Amir Warrick (Washington, DC) and Barrett to a string of easy baskets before the six-minute mark. Unfortunately, Chestnut Hill College could not keep up the effort as Bloomsburg University tied the score, 37-37, with 1:34 remaining and scored five of the half's last seven points to lead the Griffins at halftime, 42-39.
After the break, the Huskies took the lead, emerging from the early back-and-forth for a five-point edge, 58-53, just before the 16-minute mark (16:06). Later, a three pointer from Rider (58-56, 15:45) and a free throw from freshman guard
Gabe Perez (Philadelphia, Pa.) (61-59, 13:29) twice cut the Bloomsburg University lead to just two points, but that is as close as the Griffins would get. The Huskies advanced their position to double digits, 77-66, with 9:34 to play and scored a critical three point basket with a little more than a minute to play, 93-84 (1:03), to afford themselves the closing free throws in a 101-88 final.
Freshman guard Justin Anderson (Philadelphia, Pa.) was Bloomsburg University's top scorer with 25 points in excess of his six rebounds, four assists, a block, and a steal. He got plenty of help from senior guard Ky Mauras (Reading, Pa.), who totaled 24 points, five rebounds, six assists, and a steal. Junior forward Max Wagner (Perkasie, Pa.) was the third Husky in double figures. He paired his 16 points with six rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
Barrett was 10-of-18 (.556) from the floor and 4-of-5 (.800) from the free throw line en route to matching his season-high point total of 24. He also recorded eight rebounds, an assist, two blocks, and a steal. Rider's 22 points is a season-high as well; he hit three, three point baskets (3-of-7, .429) and hit all five of his free throws (5-of-5, 1.000) while also recording three rebounds, two assists, and a steal. Bailey (12 points, 4-of-5 3PT) and freshman guard
Julius Phillips (Philadelphia, Pa.) (11 points) joined Barrett and Rider in double figures, while Warrick led the Griffins on the glass with 11 rebounds.
Chestnut Hill College returns to action on Saturday, November 30, when they host West Chester University in a 1:00 p.m. contest.
