PHILADELPHIA (12/14/2019) – Chestnut Hill College fell to Adelphi University, 89-61, in Sorgenti Arena on Saturday. The Griffins (0-9, 0-2) had nine different players finish with points, including a career-high 25 points from freshman guard
Scottie Spann Jr. (Philadelphia, Pa.), but the Panthers (8-3, 3-1) presence from the field was too much as they finished shooting 50 percent, including a 45.2 percent clip from three-point range.
Adelphi University found its hot hand early, jumping out to a 31-9 lead midway through the first half thanks to four three-pointers by junior guard Spencer Foley (Chicago, Ill.).
The Griffins battled their way back into the game after Spann Jr. and sophomore guard
James Rider IV (Baltimore, Md.) produced double figures in the first half. The duo helped bring the Scarlet and Gold back within single digits, but a Panthers 15-4 run to end the half gave them a 51-31 lead heading into the break. Adelphi University held onto the lead and glided down the stretch, with nine different players registering its 38 second half points to post the 28-point win.
On top of Spann Jr.'s team-high 25 points, he also led the Griffins with nine rebounds. Rider finished with 15 points and a team-high two steals. Freshman guard
Conor Regan (Mullica Hill, N.J.) dished out a team-high three assists on top of his seven rebounds.
Guards
Jesse Balcer Jr. (Lafayette Hill, Pa.),
Colin Flach (Glenside, Pa.), and
Kurt Von Colln (Altoona, Pa.) registered season-high minutes, with 14-plus minutes on the floor for each. Flach matched season-highs with six points and two rebounds. Balcer Jr., Von Colln, freshman guard
Mo Kahney (Lansdale, Pa.), and freshman guard
Mark Kalala (Conshohocken, Pa.) all got on the board with a basket each.
Four Panthers reached double-figures, including Foley, who tallied a team-high 19 points. Ronnie Silva (Nashua, N.H.) scored 16 points and had a team-high four assists. Senior forward Tim Delaney (Mullica Hill, N.J.) led Adelphi University with eight rebounds and matched Silva's team-high in assists with four.
Next up for the Griffins is a trip to Baltimore, Md. for a matchup with NCAA Division I opponent Morgan State University. The game will tip off at 4 p.m. on Monday, December 16.
