Lakewood, N.J. - (12/3/2019) – Chestnut Hill College opened their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule with tonight's tipoff at Georgian Court University. Junior forward
Eli Barrett (Harrisburg, Pa.) shouldered the load for the Griffins, scoring a team-best 17 points and collecting a team-high 16 rebounds in a double-double performance that kept the Scarlet and Gold on the Lions' heels to a 34-31 halftime spread, but was not was not enough to sustain Georgian Court University's continued success in a 77-59 final.
Barrett went to work early, cleaning up the glass for 11 first-half rebounds. The extra possessions helped Chestnut Hill College (0-7, 0-1) stay competitive with Georgian Court University (2-4, 1-0) through the opening 20 minutes as the Lions found a 14-point lead, 29-15 (6:44) before a Scarlet and Gold rally reduced the halftime spread to just three points; 34-31. After intermission, Georgian Court University took advantage of the Griffins' 25% (9-of-36) shooting performance, growing their lead to 10 points with 15:13 (46-36) remaining in the second half and 20 points (68-48) with 5:45 to go. The Lions' lead maxed out at 22 points (74-52) in the closing minutes (1:18) and used their late free throw opportunities to keep their distance in an 18-point (77-59) final spread.
Five Lions scored in double figures; junior guard Alonzo Ortiz-Taylor (Queens, N.Y.) led the pack with 20 points in excess of his four rebounds, an assist, and two steals. Senior forward Matt Ringel (Marlboro, N.J.) provide plenty of help in Georgian Court University's success with 13 points, 11 rebounds, and a pair of blocks.
Barrett grabbed nine of his 16 rebounds on the offensive end, hit 5-of-6 (.833) at the free throw line, and offered two blocks and a steal to the Chestnut Hill College defensive effort. Sophomore guard sophomore forward
Amir Warrick (Washington, DC) was the only other Griffins to score in double figures as he shot an efficient 4-of-8 (.500) from the field and 3-of-4 (.750) at the free throw line to total 11 points. He also recorded six rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and a steal.
Chestnut Hill College continues their CACC schedule on Saturday, December 7, when they welcome Goldey-Beacom College to campus for a 3:00 p.m. contest.
