Griffins Sack Lions; Hewlett Champions Scarlet and Gold Victory in CACC Opener

Lakewood, N.J. - (12/3/2019) – A career night from Bri Hewlett (North Wales, Pa.) delivered Chestnut Hill College a 73-67 victory over Georgian Court University in this evening's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) season opener. The Griffins' sophomore forward scored three, three point baskets (3-of-3, 1.000) in a 7-of-10 (.700) shooting performance that accounted for Scarlet and Gold's final eight points of the second quarter, gave the Griffins their first lead of the game with 2:40 (63-62) to play, a four-point lead, 67-63, with a little more than a minute (1:08) remaining in the game, and resulted in a career-high 17 points.
 
Georgian Court University (1-4, 0-1) led Chestnut Hill College (2-5, 1-0) for the first 24 minutes of the contest. The Lions maximized their advantage in the closing seconds of the first quarter, 22-7 (0:35), and barely escaped Hewlett's late second-quarter fury, before relinquishing the lead to the Griffins for the first time on a the second of two free throws from sophomore forward Leah Miller (Punxsutawney, Pa.) with 6:04 (40-40) remaining in the third quarter. The second time was on a Hewlett layup with 1:05 (47-46) to go in the frame. But Georgian Court University regained their composure, reestablishing their favor to 11 points, 60-49 (8:18), in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter. The Scarlet and Gold march to victory began with a pair of well-earned free throws from sophomore guard Lauren Crim (Warrington, Pa.) (60-51, 8:06). It captured the lead, 63-62, on a Hewlett three pointer with 2:40 remaining, and delivered them a 73-67 victory in their first conference challenge of the season.
 
Junior guard Nerea Brajac (Cohoes, N.Y.) and sophomore forward Ivona Krakic (Novi Grad, Bosnia) both recorded doubles-doubles for Georgian Court University; the former added six assists and five steals to her 19 points and 10 rebounds, while the latter provided two assists and three blocks to her 12 points and 10 rebounds. They received plenty of help from senior forward Safiyyah Lee (Camden, N.J.), who supplied 12 points, nine rebounds, three assists, and a steal.
 
Hewlett's 17 points led four Griffins in double figures. Junior guard Cassie Sebold (Willow Grove, Pa.) was tops among the Scarlet and Gold starters with 15 points in excess of her two rebounds, three assists, a block, and two steals. Crim also joined Chestnut Hill College's double digit quartet with 11 points. She additionally recorded four rebounds, an assist, and two steals. Sophomore forward Rachael Millan (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) was the fourth, serving as a factor in the Griffins' success with 12 points, eight rebounds, an assist, and a steal.
 
Chestnut Hill College continues their CACC schedule on Saturday, December 7, when they welcome Goldey-Beacom College to campus for a 1:00 p.m. tipoff.
