Philadelphia, Pa. – (2/16/2019) – In a high-scoring Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) affair that saw Chestnut Hill College outshoot (57.1%; 32-of-56 to 48.4%; 31-of-64) and outrebound (32-29) Felician University, it was the Golden Falcons who emerged victorious in a 101-89 final. The Griffins produced four double digit scorers, including career-highs from senior guard
Liban Awl (Manassas, Va.) (25 points) and senior forward
Tony Toplyn Jr. (Sicklervile, N.J.) (20). Freshman forward
Amir Warrick (Washington, DC) was also one of the Scarlet and Gold's double-digit scorers as he paired 10 points with 11 rebounds for his first career double-double.
Felician University (11-11, 9-6) paced Chestnut Hill College (3-20, 0-14) for most a competitive first half. The Griffins took the initial lead of the contest with a Toplyn basket at 19:17 (2-0) and later stole the advantage back from the Golden Falcons on a three pointer from sophomore
Colin Flach (Glenside, Pa.) at 6:55 (29-27). But four ties later and nine lead changes later, Felician University took a narrow 45-43 lead into the locker rooms.
The contest remained close at the start of the second half with an emphatic Toplyn dunk giving Chestnut Hill College a 58-57 lead at 15:28. Unfortunately, a Felician University three pointer at 14:03 (62-60) and a pair of free throws from junior guard Zamir Wright (Newark, N.J.) (64-60, 13:43) triggered a 37-29 run to the final buzzer. The Golden Falcon lead reached double digits for the first time at 9:39 (77-66) and maxed out at 17 points, 93-76, just past the three-minute mark (2:54).
Wright led four Golden Falcons in double figures with 23 points; he scored 20 of them in the second half thanks to a 12-of-13 (.923) performance at the free throw line. Wright also recorded two rebounds, six assists, and four steals. Senior forward Rahsaan Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y.) offered 21 points and five rebounds, while freshman forward Dee-End McRae (Irvington, N.J.) chipped in 19 points, seven rebounds, and a block. Freshman guard Aziz Parker (Westhampton, N.J.) was Felician University's fourth double digit scorer with 12 points.
Awl (8-of-12, .667) added two rebounds, five assists, and five steals to his career-high scoring performance. Likewise, Toplyn (9-of-12, .750) recorded four rebounds, an assist, and a block in addition to his career-high. Warrick (5-of-10, .500) also offered two assists, a block, and a steal. All three were efficient from the floor, combining to shoot 22-of-34 (.647). Flach was the Griffins' fourth double digit scorer, tying his career and season-high with 12 points.
Chestnut Hill College continues their CACC schedule on Tuesday, February 19, when they welcome Holy Family University to Sorgenti Arena for an 8:00 p.m. tipoff.
