Philadelphia, Pa. – (2/19/2019) – Chestnut Hill College picked up another valuable win in their push for the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) postseason with tonight's 71-60 victory over Holy Family University. The Scarlet and Gold overpowered the Tigers in the second half, overcoming a 27-26 halftime deficit with a balanced team effort at both ends of the floor and a 17-of-19 (.895) performance at the free throw line. Cassie Sebold (Willow Grove, Pa.) was 10-of-10 (1.000) on her second-half free throw opportunities and served as the Griffins lead scorer with 13 points.
Holy Family University (7-17, 5-11) controlled the early going, pacing Chestnut Hill College (8-15, 6-9) to a 20-14 first quarter spread and a 25-16 (7:56) second quarter advantage before the Griffins hit their stride. A three pointer from freshman forward
Bri Hewlett (North Wales, Pa.) at 5:43 reduced the deficit to six points, 25-19, and a little more than three minutes later (2:09) another long range basket from freshman guard
Morgan Orloski (Bethlehem, Pa.) brought Chestnut Hill College within three points, 27-24, of Holy Family University. But the Tigers were not willing to give up the lead just yet as a pair of Trossi free throws (27-26, 2:09) – the Griffins only ones of the half – were the only points scored in the final two minutes of the first half.
The first lead change of the game came on the first basket of the second half as a layup from freshman forward
Leah Miller (Punxsutawney, Pa.) gave the Griffins a 28-27 (9:13) edge. From there, the advantage changed hands three times in the third quarter with the margin never growing larger than five points in either direction. Fortunately, the Scarlet and Gold took a 47-45 lead to the fourth quarter and controlled the contest the rest of the way, pushing the difference to double digits, 66-56, with 35 seconds (0:35) left to play and extending it to as many as 13 points a couple times (0:31, 0:19) thanks to a series of Sebold free throws.
Four Tigers reached double figures; two offered a dozen (12) points - junior forward Elizabeth Radley (Hainesport, N.J.) and freshman guard Molly Masciantonio (Morton, Pa.) - but it was a 11-point, 10-rebound double-double from sophomore guard Anjelai Hayes (Woodbury, N.J.) that headlined the Holy Family University roster. She also recorded a block and two steals. Masciantonio additionally provided five rebounds, six assists, two blocks, and a steal. Sophomore guard Ege-ly Viirmaa (Tallinn, Estonia) was Holy Family University's fourth double-digit scorer, offering 11 points in excess of a rebound, three assists, and a steal.
Sebold accelerated her final stats with 10 free throws in the final 53 seconds (0:53). She added four rebounds, five assists, and a steal to her 13 points. Miller was the only other Griffin in double figures; she totaled 12 points in addition to four rebounds. Feshman guard
Abbey Spratt (Doylestown, Pa.) and senior guard
Mary Trossi (Somerset, N.J.) helped Sebold in the backcourt with a combined 10 points, 12 rebounds, and 11 assists. Spratt (5 points, 4 assists) recorded a team and season-high seven rebounds, while Trossi crept within nine points of the 1,000-point plateau with five points.
Chestnut Hill College returns to Sorgenti Arena on Saturday, February 23, when they conclude their 2019 home schedule with a 1:00 p.m. Senior Day game versus CACC rival, Wilmington University.
