Philadelphia, Pa. – (2/23/2019) – Chestnut Hill College erased a seven-point, 57-50 (8:42), fourth-quarter deficit and controlled a six-point, 70-64, advantage with 1:49 remaining in the regulation. But a closing 6-0 Wilmington University run – which ended with a last-second three pointer from graduate guard Macy Robinson (Wilmington, Del.) - knotted the game at 70-70 (0:08) and forced an extra frame. There, the Wildcats outperformed the Griffins by an 18-5 margin, escaping Sorgenti Arena with an 88-75 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory. Prior to the start of this afternoon's contest, the Chestnut Hill College Department of Athletics and Recreation recognized the collegiate careers of guard
Mary Trossi (Somerset, N.J.), forward
Mary Bode (Zaria Kaduna State, Nigeria), graduate guard
Brianna Cullen (Lansdale, Pa.), and forward
Jaeda Wildgoose (Franklin Township, N.J.) in a celebratory Senior Day ceremony.
Wilmington University (7-18, 7-10) scored the first basket of the affair (3-0, 8:29) and stayed a step ahead of Chestnut Hill College (8-16, 6-10) throughout the first quarter, 21-16. The Wildcats were able to extend their position late in the second quarter thanks to a three point basket from Robinson (36-26, 0:48) and a last-possession layup (38-26, 0:10) from sophomore forward Jadyn Whitsitt (Fort Washington, Md.) that gave them a 38-26 halftime lead.
The deficit quickly reach 17 points, 43-26 (8:59), early in the third quarter as Robinson continued to connect from the perimeter. Chestnut Hill College went to the post to whittle down the Wildcat lead, using a string of buckets from Wildgoose and freshman forward
Leah Miller (Punxsutawney, Pa.) to cut the difference to eight points, 43-35, with 6:38 remaining in the frame. Unfortunately, Wilmington University was able to recover, pushing their advantage back to 13 points, 48-35 (5:42) before a Scarlet and Gold rally reduced the margin to four points, 54-50 (0:59) for the fourth-quarter break. In the fourth quarter, back-to-back three pointers from freshman guard
Morgan Orloski (Bethlehem, Pa.) (57-53, 8:27) and junior forward
Shannon Glenn (Philadelphia, Pa.) cut the Wildcat advantage to a single point, 57-56 (7:52).
Chestnut Hill College eventually tied the contest, 62-62, on a Glenn layup at 3:45 and took the lead, 65-64, for the first time on a three pointer from freshman forward
Bri Hewlett (North Wales, Pa.) at 3:12. A Wildgoose jumper maxed the Griffin lead at six points, 70-64 (1:49), but three Wildcat free throws and Robinson's late three extended the contest for one more frame.
In overtime, the game quickly got away from Chestnut Hill College as a jumper from freshman guard Kiara Eubanks (Accokeek, Md.) (76-73, 3:21) and another Robinson three (79-73, 2:47) gave Wilmington University the separation they needed to close out the contest at the free throw line. The Wildcats hit 9-of-10 (.900) free throws in the final minutes of the contest and allowed only an Orloski layup (86-75, 0:33) to win the affair by an 88-75 final.
A short-handed Wilmington University offered three players with double-double performances. Robinson finished with a game-high 34 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, and a steal. Whitsitt totaled 22 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, and a steal. And senior forward Nyree Grant (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y.) offered 12 points, 15 rebounds, two assists, a block, and five steals.
Wildgoose recorded her ninth double-double of the season as she totaled 18 points and 13 rebounds, but Orloski served as Chestnut Hill College's leading scorer with a season-high 20 points. Orloski was perfect, hitting 7-of-7 (1.000) from the floor, 4-of-4 (1.000) from the long range, and 2-of-2 (1.000) from the free throw line. She also recorded an assist and a steal. Freshman guard
Lauren Crim (Warrington, Pa.) was the third Griffin to finish in double figures (12 points), while Trossi was a major contributor as well with three points, five rebounds, and nine assists.
Chestnut Hill College returns to action on Monday, February 25, when they visit Nyack College for a 6:00 p.m. CACC contest.
