Griffins Loose High-Scoring Senior Day Battle to Wildcats

Philadelphia, Pa. – (2/23/2019) – Chestnut Hill College recorded a season-high 93 points in today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest, unfortunately, their opponents from Wilmington University scored a little more in a 105-93 end. Five Griffins finished in double figures, including senior forward Ed McWade (Wildwood, N.J.), who paired him team-high 21 points with 11 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. Prior to the start of the affair, the Chestnut Hill College Department of Athletics and Recreation recognized the collegiate careers of McWade, forward Tony Toplyn Jr. (Sicklerville, N.J.), forward Dexter Thompson (Providence, R.I.), guard Liban Awl (Manassas, Va.), and forward Roman Letterlough (Harrisburg, Pa.) in a celebratory Senior Day ceremony.
 
The first half was highly-competitive with Wilmington University (12-14, 9-8) pacing Chestnut Hill College (3-22, 0-16) to a 47-41 halftime spread. The Wildcats took the initial lead with a pair of free throws from senior guard Thomas Farrior (Willingboro, N.J.) (2-0, 19:43), but they were not able to build a cushion until the later minutes of the period as McWade (eight points, seven rebounds, two assists, and a block) and freshman guard Trevonn Pitts (Wyncote, Pa.) (10 points, three rebounds, and two assists) captained a Griffin effort that generated a pair of ties and four lead changes in the frame. The Scarlet and Gold led for the last time at 6:36 (27-26), but kept the Wildcat lead to single digits for the remainder of the frame.
 
The Wilmington University advantage finally reached double digits, 59-47, just past the 17-minute mark (16:50) of the second half. From there, the Wildcat lead ballooned to as many as 24 points, 82-58 (9:35), before Chestnut Hill College was able to issue a response. The Scarlet and Gold rally flowed through McWade and Awl, who combined for 22 points in the final 20 minutes. An Awl three pointer at 1:33 cut the deficit to single digits, 93-84, for the first time since the first half, unfortunately, the Wildcats took advantage of their closing free throw chances and pushed the final margin to 12 points, 105-93.
 
A short-handed Wilmington University roster saw five of seven players finish in double figures. Farrior led the group with a game-high 29 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Junior guard Jermaine Head (Edgewood, Md.) and freshman forward Jordan Harding (Bear, Del.) both provided 22 points; the former also recorded five rebounds, six assists, and a steal, while the latter back his scoring with 13 rebounds, two assists, and two blocks. Freshman guard Alvin West (Smyrna, Del.) totaled 15 points, two rebounds, three assists, a block, and a steal, while sophomore guard Danny Walsh (Bear, Del.) offered 12 points, six rebounds, and four assists.
 
Behind McWade - who also supplied two assists and a block - four other Griffins scored in double figures. Pitts finished with 14 points in excess of four rebounds and two assists. Toplyn and Thompson recorded 12 points and five rebounds apiece; the former also contributed two blocks and a steal, while the latter additionally offered four assists. Lastly, Awl totaled 11 points, two rebounds, and two assists.
 
Chestnut Hill College continues their CACC schedule on Monday, February 25, when they visit Nyack College for an 8:00 p.m. tipoff.
