Griffins Lose Grip In Loss to Cougars

Caldwell, N.J. – (2/9/2019) – Chestnut Hill College continued their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule this afternoon at Caldwell University, where they struggled from the perimeter (2-of-17, .118) and turned the ball over 31 times in an 86-51 loss to the Cougars. A fourth double-double of the season – and third in her last four games – for Leah Miller (Punxsutawney, Pa.) served as the silver lining for the Scarlet and Gold as the freshman center totaled 15 points and 10 rebounds in an efficient 21 minutes.

Caldwell University (7-14, 7-7) wasted little time establishing themselves as they owned an 11-point, 17-6, lead before the four-minute mark (4:07). Chestnut Hill College (6-15, 4-9) looked to paint to make a comeback, but the Cougars' lead reached 14 points, 27-13 (0:02), by the end of the opening quarter and 20 points, 35-15, early in the second quarter (6:54). The Scarlet and Gold finally found some success in latter minutes of the frame as Miller and senior forward Jaeda Wildgoose (Franklin Township, N.J.) were able to help the Griffins trim the deficit to 11 points, 35-24, just after the two-minute mark (1:57). Unfortunately, a quick Caldwell University reprise pushed the margin back to 13 points, 42-29 (0:32) for halftime. In the third quarter, a 29-8 differential distanced the Cougars by 34 points, 71-37 (0:06) and the spread reached as many as 40 points, 82-42 (3:31), in the closing minutes of the contest.

Four Cougars reached double figures; junior guard Tina Lebron (Manalapan, N.J.) led the pride with 20 points. She hit 6-of-10 (.600) from three point territory, while providing three assists and six steals. Freshman center Tamrin Henderson (Woodbridge, Va.) was her top compliment, coming off the Caldwell University bench for 18 points, three rebounds, and a steal. Fellow freshman, guard Paula Dits (Alicante, Spain) offered 16 points, six rebounds, three assists, and two steals, while graduate guard Alessia Smaldone (Malnate, Italy) contributed 10 points, two rebounds, eight assists, and three steals.

Miller (7-of-12, .583) and Wildgoose (5-of-7, .714) combined to go 12-of-19 (.632) from the field, while the rest of the Griffins went 9-of-34 (.265). Miller added an assist, a block, and a steal to her double-double. Wildgoose finished with 10 points, five rebounds, an assist, and a block.

Chestnut Hill College briefly breaks from CACC play to host the University of New Haven in a 6:00 p.m. contest on Thursday, February 14.
