Gautier Clinches, Griffins Defeat Firebirds

Antoine Gautier
Washington, DC – (3/12/2019) – In tandem, the Chestnut Hill College men's and women's tennis teams traveled to our Nation's capital today, Tuesday, March 12, to visit the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) for a pair of dual matches. The Griffins got a head start in the men's match as the shorthanded Firebirds forfeited at number three doubles and number six singles. After winning the remaining doubles matches, Chestnut Hill College continued to control the match during individual play. There, junior Antoine Gautier (Bordeaux, France) scored the clincher – the third of six straight Scarlet and Gold singles wins - in the third flight, 6-1, 6-3.

With number three doubles already in hand, a 6-1 win at number two doubles from Gautier and junior Adam Gavin (Gothenburg, Sweden) awarded Chestnut Hill College (7-2) the doubles point over UDC (0-3), 1-0. Freshman Tom Pitchley (London, England) and junior Erik Jorsal (Mudgeeraba, Australia) completed the Griffins' doubles sweep with their 6-4 triumph in the top flight. As play moved to singles, the Scarlet and Gold inherited a second point with a Firebird default in the sixth flight, 2-0. Chestnut Hill College scored their next point at number five singles, where freshman Kai Adler (Leer, Germany) recorded a 6-0, 6-0, victory (3-0). The fourth and deciding point followed soon after thanks to Gautier's win in the third individual flight, 4-0. In closing, respective number two (6-1, 7-5) and four singles (6-0, 6-0) wins from sophomore Jesus Darias (Bolivar, Venezuela) and Jorsal bookended a 6-3, 6-4, Firebird with at number one singles.

The Chestnut Hill College men's and women's tennis teams play together again on Friday, March 15, when the Griffins host the New York Institute of Technology in for a pair of 2:00 p.m. matches.
