Griffins Drop Pair to Golden Falcons, Contoudis and Barletta Homer

Norristown, Pa. – (3/24/2019) – A nine-run fourth inning played a major factor in a 12-4, game-one victory for Felician University. But in game-two of today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader at Latshaw-McCarthy Field, Chestnut Hill College and the Golden Falcons battled to the bitter end of a 5-4 final.

Sophomore centerfielder John Contoudis (Jenkintown, Pa.) was 2-for-5 with a run and a run-batted-in (RBI) in the opener as he led off a four-run sixth inning with his first home run of the season. In game two, junior right fielder Zach Szumigala (Fairless Hills, Pa.) and freshman second baseman Luke LeBeau (Pittsfield, Mass.) both recorded a pair of hits at the bottom of the Chestnut Hill College (6-12, 1-3) lineup; the former singled home critical runs in both the fourth and sixth frames. Sophomore Andrew Dietz (Warrington, Pa.) lasted the full seven innings; he took the loss (2-2), allowing five runs on 10 hits and a walk, while striking out five.

Game one was scoreless through three innings. Unfortunately, in the fourth inning, Felician University (10-14, 4-2) separated with nine runs on seven hits, a couple hit batsman, and a Griffin error, 9-0. They added a 10th run in the fifth inning, before Chestnut Hill College issued a response. In the sixth inning, Contoudis scored the first of four Scarlet and Gold runs with a home run to left center, 10-1. A one-out single from Dietz, a beaming of sophomore shortstop Jared Healey (Philadelphia, Pa.), a double to left center from senior left fielder Franklin Ramirez (Reading, Pa.), 10-2, a double to right field from junior designated hitter Dutch Reardon (Lafayette Hill, Pa.), 10-3, and a LeBeau single through the left side reduced the spread to 10-4. Unfortunately, the Griffins went scoreless in their final three at-bats, while the Golden Falcons added two more for a 12-4 opening victory.

Chestnut Hill College scored the first run of game two with the first career home run for sophomore catcher Sam Barletta (Royersford, Pa.), 1-0. But Felician University homered in the top of the second inning, 1-1, added another run with a third-inning sacrifice fly, 2-1, and a third with a pair of fourth-inning doubles, 3-1. The Scarlet and Gold tied it up in the bottom of the fourth inning, thanks to a one-out double from Healey, a two-out singles from Szumigala, 3-2, LeBeau, and junior third baseman Ameir Uzzell (Levittown, Pa.), 3-3, and a run apiece in the sixth inning put the score at 4-4 heading to the final frame. There, a leadoff home run for the Golden Falcons factored as the difference maker in a 5-4 final.

Chestnut Hill College returns to Latshaw-McCarthy Field tomorrow, Monday, March 25, to host Caldwell University in a 12:00 p.m. CACC doubleheader.
