Miami Gardens, Fla. – (3/5/2019) – Today's action brought Chestnut Hill College to St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens, Florida, where the Bobcats served the Griffins a 12-1 loss. Sophomore centerfielder
John Contoudis (Jenkintown, Pa.) recorded two of the Scarlet and Gold's three hits, including a run-scoring triple in the ninth inning. Junior
Thomas Spratt (Doylestown, Pa.) was the pinch runner who scored on the Contoudis three-bagger, while senior left fielder
Franklin Ramirez (Reading, Pa.) recorded the other Chestnut Hill College hit.
St. Thomas University (15-5) scored two runs in both the first and third innings, before adding five more between the fourth (3 runs) and fifth innings (2), and three more in the seventh frame for a stout 12-0 advantage. Chestnut Hill College (1-4) only had a few chances to score on the Bobcat combination of freshman Jordan Rodriguez (Penbrooke Pines, Fla.) and graduate Orlando Rodriguez (Havana, Cuba), who held the Griffins to two hits and two walk through the first six innings. Junior Jonathan Mendez (Miami, Fla.) pitched the final three innings for St. Thomas University, holding the Chestnut Hill College to the Spratt's walk and Contoudis' triple.
Contoudis also led off the second inning with a single back to the pitcher, but he was unfortunately thrown out trying to steal second base on the very next pitch. On the second pitch to
Jared Healey (Philadelphia, Pa.), a batted ball to the Bobcat third baseman allowed the Scarlet and Gold's sophomore shortstop to reach first. He reached second base on a two-out single to left field from Ramirez, but a strikeout ended the initial Chestnut Hill College rally prematurely. Contoudis also reach in the seventh inning, doing so when he drew a one-out walk, and hustled to second base on an error by the St. Thomas University catcher. He later advanced third base on a Healey ground out to first base, but never reached home. In the ninth inning, Spratt drew his one-out walk on four pitches and then sprinted around the bases to score on Contoudis' following triple.
Chestnut Hill College plays next on Thursday, March 5, when they visit Barry University for a 6:00 p.m. contest.
