Barry University Bests Chestnut Hill College

Miami Shores, Fla. – (3/7/2019) – Chestnut Hill College visited Barry University for tonight's nine-inning affair, there the Buccaneers used a four-run second inning to endure the Griffins to a 4-1 end. The Scarlet and Gold cleared their run in the fifth inning, thanks to a leadoff single to right center from sophomore centerfielder John Contoudis (Jenkintown, Pa.), a single through the right side from sophomore shortstop Jared Healey (Philadelphia, Pa.), and a sacrifice fly from senior left fielder Franklin Ramirez (Reading, Pa.).

Chestnut Hill College (1-5) had a runner on third base with one out in the first inning, but freshman Franklin Gonzalez II (Miramar, Fla.) got Barry University (12-4) out of the game with a strikeout and a fly to right field. He sat the Griffins down in order in the second inning and benefitted from four Buccaneer runs in the bottom of the frame, 4-0. In the fifth inning, Contoudis led off with a single to right center and stole second base before reaching third base on Healey's single. Ramirez served a second 1-2 pitch to centerfield, platting Contoudis, 4-1. Unfortunately, the Griffins were unable to do anything else in the frame. They had another chance to do damage in the eighth inning, where a one-out, pinch hit walk to junior Zach Szumigala (Fairless Hill, Pa.) and a single through the left side from junior third baseman Ameir Uzzell (Levittown, Pa.) were silenced with a pop out to second base and another Gonzalez strikeout. In the ninth inning, a Buccaneer error gave the Griffins a final chance; Healey reached on the two-out miscue by the third baseman and achieved second base on a single to right field from Ramirez, but senior Hugo Casilla (Miami, Fla.) eventually spoiled the opportunity with comeback ground out.

Healey (2-for-4) and Uzzell (2-for-4) each recorded two of the Griffins' seven hits. Sophomore Billy Bethel (Yardley, Pa.) (0-2) pitched well in defeat, allowing only those four second-inning runs while striking out four in a complete-game effort.

Chestnut Hill College begins a three-game series at Palm Beach Atlantic University tomorrow, Friday, March 8, with a 6:00 p.m. contest.
