Griffins Succumb to Sailfish in Series Opener

West Palm Beach, Fla. – (3/8/2019) – After their at-bat in the fourth inning, Chestnut Hill College controlled a 6-2 advantage, but Palm Beach Atlantic University outscored the Griffins 5-0 the rest of the way in a narrow 7-6 final. The winning run came across in walk-off fashion as the Sailfish used a one-out double, an intentional walk, a hit batsman, and a single to left field to cut their ninth-inning at-bat short.

Sophomore first baseman Andrew Dietz (Warrington, Pa.) (2-for-3) carried a big bat for the Chestnut Hill College (1-6), knocking in three of the Griffins' run with singles in the first and fifth innings. Senior catcher Eric Gilham (Deptford, N.J.) (1-for-3) batted home two Scarlet and Gold runs between his first-inning sacrifice fly and a third-inning single to left. Freshman second baseman Luke LeBeau (Pittsfield, Mass.) recorded a pair of hits (2-for-3) and scored twice during the Griffins' third and fourth-inning success.

In the first inning, junior third baseman Ameir Uzzell (Levittown, Pa.) led off with a single through the left side and quickly scored on Dietz's double to right center, 1-0. After a sacrifice bunt from sophomore right fielder Sam Barletta (Royersford, Pa.) and Gilham's sacrifice fly the Griffins controlled an early 2-0 lead. Unfortunately, Palm Beach Atlantic University (8-11) matched their production in the bottom of the frame, 2-2. Still, the Griffins took the lead again in the third inning, where a LeBeau leadoff single, a beaming of Uzzell, a fielder's choice – sacrifice – and a one-out single from Gilham, 3-2, and separated for a 6-2 advantage with three runs in the fourth inning. Sophomore shortstop Jared Healey (Philadelphia, Pa.) led off that frame with a single to centerfield. Later, a two-out single from LeBeau, an error by the Sailfish third baseman, and a Dietz single to centerfield completed the sequence. Unfortunately, Palm Beach Atlantic University scored a run in the bottom of the fourth inning, 6-3, two in the fifth inning, 6-5, and on in the seventh inning to tie the contest at 6-6. The Sailfish won the affair in their final at-bat, manufacturing a one-out walk into their ninth-inning, game-winner, 7-6.

Chestnut Hill College completes their three-game series with Palm Beach Atlantic University tomorrow, Saturday, March 9, with a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader.
