West Palm Beach, Fla. – (3/9/2019) – Chestnut Hill College concluded their spring trip to southern Florida with today's twin bill at Palm Beach Atlantic University. There, the Sailfish scored 16-6 and 12-2 victories over the Griffins. Sophomore shortstop
Jared Healey (Philadelphia, Pa.) had two hits (2-for-5) in the opener before finishing the day with three hits (3-for-7), two runs, and a run-batted-in (RBI).
Palm Beach Atlantic University (10-11) scored a run in the first inning of the afternoon and three more in the second inning to hold an early 4-0 lead on Chestnut Hill College (1-8). The Griffins got a run back in the third inning, where a one-out single to left field from freshman second baseman
Luke LeBeau (Pittsfield, Mass.), a throwing error, and a fielder's choice off the bat of junior third baseman
Ameir Uzzell (Levittown, Pa.) plated the first Scarlet and Gold tally, 4-1. The spread stayed there until the fifth inning. The Sailfish scored four runs in the frame, 8-1, six runs in the seventh inning, 14-2, and three runs in the eighth inning to overshadow Chestnut Hill College in a 16-6 end. The Griffins enjoyed their most success in the eighth inning, there a two-out, pinch hit walk from freshman
Matt Mastrogiovanni (Sicklerville, N.J.), a Healey single down the left field line, a walk to junior catcher
Thomas Spratt (Doylestown, Pa.), a walk to sophomore centerfielder
John Contoudis (Jenkintown, Pa.), 14-3, a walk to freshman designated hitter
Dutch Reardon (Lafayette Hill, Pa.), 14-4, and a balk brought the Scarlet and Gold within nine runs of Palm Beach Atlantic University, 14-5. Unfortunately, the Sailfish outscored the Griffins 2-1 in the final frame, 16-6.
Chestnut Hill College fell behind early in the second game as well. Palm Beach Atlantic University scored three runs in the first inning, 3-0. The Griffins got on the scoreboard a couple innings later, scoring a third-inning run after a leadoff walk from senior left fielder
Franklin Ramirez (Reading, Pa.), a balk, a LaBeau sacrifice bunt, and a Spratt ground out to short, 3-1. But a four-run fourth inning gave the Sailfish a 7-1 edge until the latter frames of the affair. In the fifth inning, Healey led off with a single down the right field line, a wild pitch, a Ramirez single to left field, and a Spratt single through the left side, 7-2. But that was as close as the Griffins would get with Palm Beach Atlantic University scoring five runs over the final two innings, 12-2.
Chestnut Hill College returns from their spring trip to host Mansfield University in a 3:00 p.m. home opener on Friday, March 15.
