Gilham Reaches Banner Number With Four-Hit Game One, Griffins Sweep Bears

Little Ferry, N.J. – (4/17/2019) – Chestnut Hill College's 6-1, game won win over Bloomfield College was highlighted by the historic accomplishment of senior catcher Eric Gilham (Deptford, N.J.), who joined the program's 150-hit club with his fourth hit (4-for-5) – a two-run, ninth-inning double – of the contest. Afterwards, the Scarlet and Gold completed their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) sweep of the Bears with a 3-2 victory. Sophomore Thomas Hughes (Phoenixville, Pa.) followed masterful game-one performances from sophomores Billy Bethel (Yardley, Pa.) (W, 7.0IP, 3H, 1R, 2BB, 11K) and Will Shaffer (Sicklerville, N.J.) (SV, 2.0IP, 2H, 1BB, 3K) with one of his own as he collected the game two victory (2-3) by limiting the Bears to two runs on five hits and a walk. He struck out nine in the seven-inning, complete game effort.

Bloomfield College (12-30-1, 12-14) got to Hughes early in game one with a run in the bottom of the second inning, 1-0. But from there, Hughes cruised, holding the Bears to a single hit before they scored their second run in the bottom of the sixth inning, 3-2. Meanwhile, Chestnut Hill College (22-18, 17-9) gave him just enough run support for the victory. The Griffins got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning, where a two-out single through the left side from sophomore right fielder Michael Perugini (Tamarac, Fla.), a stolen base, and a single though the left side from junior third baseman Ameir Uzzell (Levittown, Pa.) pushed a Scarlet and Gold run across, 1-1. The Griffins' difference maker came in the sixth inning. There, a string of singles from sophomore centerfielder John Contoudis (Jenkintown, Pa.), Gilham, sophomore first baseman Andrew Dietz (Warrington, Pa.) and senior left fielder Franklin Ramirez (Reading, Pa.) scored the first of two Griffin runs, 2-2. The second followed soon after as fielder's choice from freshman second baseman Luke LeBeau (Pittsfield, Mass.) plated Gilham as the game-winning run, 3-2. Gilham and Dietz were both 2-for-3 in the affair.

In game one, Chestnut Hill College capitalized on a pair of early runs with insurance tallies in the seventh (1 run), eighth (1), and ninth (2) innings. The Griffins scored their first run thanks to a Gilham leadoff double and a pair of Bear errors, 1-0. The second came across in the fourth inning, where Perugini's first collegiate home run soared over the right field fence, 2-0. Bloomfield College hoped to rally with a tally in the fifth inning, 2-1, but the Scarlet and Gold's late production sealed the deal for Bethel's sixth win (6-3) of the season.

The Griffin ace limited the Bears to just the one run on three hits and two walks. He struck out a career-high 11 batters before handing the game over to Shaffer, who tossed two innings of scoreless relief to earn his second save (2) of the season.

Chestnut Hill College briefly breaks from their CACC tomorrow, Thursday, April 18, to host West Chester University in a 3:00 p.m. contest.
