Cougars Edge Griffins in Highly-Competitive CACC Affair

Lafayette Hill, Pa. - (4/25/2019) – Chestnut Hill College scored the first four goals of the contest, but the affair was not one-sided for long as Caldwell University tied the game at 5-5 with 14:29 remaining in the first half, and led the Griffins by a goal at halftime, 9-8. In the end, a 9-7 Cougar second half led the visitors to an eventual 18-15 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) win. Senior midfielder Julia Reinert (Bridgeport, Pa.) and junior midfielder Spencer Fitzgerald (Huntingtown, Md.) scored six goals apiece for the Scarlet and Gold; the former added an assist, seven ground balls, and eight draws, while the latter additionally provided three ground balls, two draws, and three caused turnovers.
 
After an initial tally from Reinert (1-0, 26:24) and three consecutive Fitzgerald scores (26:12, 25:21, 24:01), play evened out between Chestnut Hill College (4-9, 3-5) and Caldwell University (5-10, 4-4). The Cougars answered with back-to-back goals at 20:03 and 19:20 and responded to a fourth Fitzgerald goal (5-2, 18:56) with a three-goal run that tied the contest at 5-5 with 14:29 remaining in the first half. The Griffins answered with a three-goal run of their own to establish an 8-5 (10:57), but four Cougar tallies ended the opening half to leave the visitors with a 9-8 advantage at intermission.
 
At the start of the second half, Chestnut Hill College reclaimed the lead, 10-9, with back-to-back goals from senior attack Rita Lynn Trainer (Conshohocken, Pa.) (9-9, 29:23) and junior attack Dai Pearson (Pottstown, Pa.) (10-9, 28:05). Unfortunately, five straight Caldwell University goals put the visitors ahead 14-10 (23:13) before the 23-minute mark. Afterwards, the Griffins cut the difference to three goals on four occasions (20:17, 14:38, 11:14, 6:50), but never got closer before the final horn sounded on an 18-15 final.
 
Junior midfielder Arden Kassaleh (Pompton Plains, N.J.) led Caldwell University with a 10-point performance as she added three ground balls and 13 draws to six goals and four assists. Senior midfielder Jessica Collum (Wayne, N.J.), freshman attack Emily Lasko (Jackson, N.J.), and freshman attack Jenna Steelman (Mays Landing, N.J.) provided three goals apiece, but sophomore midfielder Samantha Murphy (Pompton Plains, N.J.) was Kassaleh's top supporter with two goals, an assist, three ground balls, six draws, and a caused turnover. In goal, freshman Mia Monacelli (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) totaled 13 saves and two ground balls in the win (4-9).

In addition to Reinert and Fitzgerald, Chestnut Hill College received goals from Pearson, Trainer, and senior attack Macailagh Smith (Red Bank, N.J.) (20:17, 2nd). All three served as playmakers; Pearson added two assists, two ground balls, and a draw, Trainer also contributed two assists and three ground balls, while Smith additionally offered three assists and a caused turnover. Senior defender Kaitlin Iavecchia (Philadelphia, Pa.) was solid in front of senior Valeria Amaya (Oakland, Calif.) with three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Amaya took the loss (4-9), despite totaling 11 saves and five ground balls.
 
Chestnut Hill College concludes their regular season and CACC schedules on Saturday, April 27, when they host Felician University in a 12:00 p.m. Senior Day contest.
