Fitzgerald Scores in Final Seconds, Griffins Collect CACC Win from Lady Chargers

Lafayette Hill, Pa. - (4/6/2019) – Today's highly competitive Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest versus Dominican College came down the final possession as a Lady Charger turnover gave the Griffins the ball with only 56 seconds (0:56) remaining. Following a Scarlet and Gold timeout, junior midfielder Spencer Fitzgerald (Huntingtown, Md.) served as the hero, beating her defender to the Dominican College cage and scoring the game-winner with just seven seconds (0:07) remaining in the affair, 17-16. Fitzgerald and senior midfielder Julia Reinert (Bridgeport, Pa.) scored seven goals apiece in the victory with the other three Griffin goals coming from senior midfielder Kaley Malampy (Ridley Park, Pa.) (2 goals) and senior midfielder Macailagh Smith (Red Bank, N.J.) (1).

Chestnut Hill College (3-5, 2-1) and Dominican College (2-6, 2-2) traded goals for the opening 10 minutes (10:13) of the contest, allowing back-to-back goals from Fitzgerald (4-3, 19:03) and Malampy to give the Griffins a 5-3 lead with 16:17 remaining in the first half. Unfortunately, that is when five straight Lady Charger goals delivered the visitors to an 8-5 (9:30) advantage. The Scarlet and Gold eventually responded with the final two tallies of the opening half; both were unassisted, the first was scored by Reinert just 10 seconds after the last goal of the Lady Charger run (8-6, 9:20) and the second by Fitzgerald only 49 seconds (8-7, 0:49) before halftime.

In the second half, the back-and-forth continued. Dominican College scored the first two goals of the frame to recover for a 10-7 (27:10) advantage. The Griffins answered with a 6-1 run that regained the lead and delivered them a 13-11 lead with 12:38 remaining; the last two Scarlet and Gold tallies came courtesy of a couple connections between senior forward Rita Lynn Trainer (Conshohocken, Pa.) and Reinert (13:20, 12:38). Unfortunately, the Lady Chargers tied the contest, 13-13, with 10:45 left and matched Chestnut Hill College over the next six minutes to leave the affair knotted at 16-16 with 2:26 remaining on the game clock. In those final minutes, Dominican College looked for an opportunity to score the game-winner. Fortunately, a charge turned the ball over to the Griffins and gave Fitzgerald the opportunity to score the deciding goal, 17-16 (0:07).

Junior attack Alayna Heegan (North Babylon, N.Y.) and junior midfielder Jenna Fox (Stony Point, N.Y.) led Dominican College; the former offered seven goals, an assist, a ground ball, eight draws, and two caused turnovers, while the latter totaled four goals, three assists, six ground balls, four draws, and three caused turnovers. In goal, freshman Rebecca Nutting (Marcellus, N.Y.) (2-6) recorded 10 saves and recovered two ground balls.

Fitzgerald finished the affair with seven goals, six ground balls, a draw, and three caused turnovers. Meanwhile, Reinert recorded seven goals, an assist, four ground balls, five draws, and a caused turnover. Malampy contributed two goals, two assists, a ground ball, five draws, and two caused turnovers. Smith provided an assist, four ground balls, and a caused turnover to her tally. In goal, senior Valeria Amaya (Oakland, Calif.) (3-5) made 13 saves and recovered a ground ball.
