Another Walk Off and a Shaffer Masterpiece Completes Griffins' Season Sweep of Devils

Norristown, Pa. – (4/6/2019) – Chestnut Hill College completed their four-game sweep of the University of the Sciences (USciences) with this evening's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victories. The Griffins recorded their fourth walk off win in the opener, capturing a 7-6 triumph with a pair of run-scoring singles from senior first baseman Eric Gilham (Deptford, N.J.) and junior pinch hitter Dutch Reardon (Lafayette Hill, Pa.). Junior Will Shaffer (Sicklerville, N.J.) (1-1) dominated game two, striking out nine Devils and only allowing an unearned run in a one-hit victory, 4-1. The bottom of the Scarlet and Gold lineup played a major role, combining to go 4-for-7 with two runs and three runs-batted-in (RBI) in the win.

Shaffer gave USciences (11-18, 7-9) little opportunity at the split as he retired 21 of 24 Devils after giving up a leadoff single in the first inning. Meanwhile, Chestnut Hill College (14-16, 9-7) scored a run in the second inning with a pair of two-out infield singles from sophomore first baseman Andrew Dietz (Warrington, Pa.) and Reardon, 1-0, two runs in the fourth inning with a series of walks, 3-0, and a sixth-inning sacrifice fly from sophomore left fielder Michael Perugini (Tamarac, Fla.), 4-1. Dietz was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs, while Reardon (1 RBI), Perugini (1), freshman second baseman Luke LeBeau (Pittsfield, Mass.) (1), and junior third baseman Ameir Uzzell (Levittown, Pa.) (1) plated the four Griffin tallies.

In the opener, USciences took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Chestnut Hill College got it back with a LeBeau RBI-double in the fifth inning, 1-1, and went on to control a 4-1 lead with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Sophomore shortstop Jared Healey (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Dietz knocked in the run there, but the Griffin advantage soon disappeared with five Devil runs between the seventh and eighth innings, 6-5. In the ninth inning, sophomore right fielder Sam Barletta (Royersford, Pa.) led off with a single to right center. It was followed by a sacrifice bunt from sophomore centerfielder John Contoudis (Jenkintown, Pa.), a Gilham single to left center, 6-6, an intentional walk to Healey, and Reardon's game-winning single to second base, 7-6. Barletta (3-for-4, 1R) and Dietz (3-for-5, 1R, 2RBI) recorded three hits apiece; the latter combined with seniors Tim Casey (Ivyland, Pa.) and Matthew Kress (Lansdale, Pa.) to allow six runs on eight hits and five walks. Dietz gave up three runs on five hits and three walks, while striking out six over the first seven innings. But Kress earned the win (2-3) with a perfect closing inning-and-a-third (1.1).

Chestnut Hill College continues their CACC schedule tomorrow, Sunday, April 7, with a noon (12:00 p.m.) doubleheader at Concordia College (NY).
