Philadelphia, Pa. – (4/9/2019) – Offense ruled the day at Jefferson as Chestnut Hill College won the first game of this evening's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) twin bill by a 15-11 measure, but surrendered game two to the Rams by an 11-7 final. Senior catcher
Eric Gilham (Deptford, N.J.) powered the Griffins to the game one win, going 4-for-5 with four runs and three runs-batted-in (RBI) thank to a double and a pair of home runs. Sophomore
Billy Bethel (Yardley, Pa.) benefitted with the win (5-3), despite allowing eight runs on 11 hits and two walks. He struck out four. Sophomore centerfielder
John Contoudis (Jenkintown, Pa.) and freshman second baseman
Luke LeBeau (Pittsfield, Mass.) knocked in two runs apiece in the nightcap.
After dropping the opener, Jefferson (12-23, 10-10) scored first run of game two with a pair of runs in the second inning, 2-0. Chestnut Hill College (17-17, 12-8) responded in the top of the third inning, scoring their first run of the game with a one-out double to left from sophomore right fielder
Michael Perugini (Tamarac, Fla.), a wild pitch, and an infield single from junior third baseman
Ameir Uzzell (Levittown, Pa.), 2-1. Uzzell quickly stole third base before RBI singles from sophomore right fielder
Sam Barletta (Royersford, Pa.) and Contoudis gave the Griffins a 3-2 advantage. The Scarlet and Gold added a fourth run in the fourth inning with a leadoff double from sophomore first baseman
Andrew Dietz (Warrington, Pa.) and a two-out single from Perugini, 4-2. Unfortunately an eight-run Ram fourth inning reversed fortunes, 10-4, pushing the home team to an eventual 11-7 victory. Barletta was 3-for-4 with two runs and a RBI, while Contoudis (2-for-4, 1R, 2RBI) and Perugini (2-for-3, 1R, 1RBI) each recorded two hits. LeBeau knocked in two runs with a fifth-inning single.
Chestnut Hill College struck first in the high-scoring opener with two first-inning tallies. Uzzell scored the first, drawing a leadoff walk and advancing to second base with a sacrifice bunt from Barletta, before coming home on an error by the Ram first baseman, 1-0. The second Scarlet and Gold run came an out later as Contoudis crossed on a double to left center from sophomore shortstop
Jared Healey (Philadelphia, Pa.), 2-0. Jefferson cut the Griffin lead in half in the bottom of the opening frame, 2-1, and grabbed a 3-2 lead with a pair of runs in the second inning. The Griffins evened the contest at 3-3 in the third inning with a one-out double from Gilham, a walk to Healey, and a single through the left side from Dietz. The real fireworks started in the fifth inning, where the Griffins score four runs on four hits, a hit batsman, and a Ram error, 7-4. The Rams reciprocated in the bottom of the fifth inning, 8-7, but in the sixth inning a Gilham two-run home run and an RBI triple from junior designated hitter
Dutch Reardon (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) again put the Griffins ahead 10-8. A Contoudis sacrifice fly made it 11-8 in the seventh inning and three more Scarlet and Gold tallies in the eighth inning made it 14-8, before the final spread settled at a 15-11. Gilham's second home run led off the ninth inning. Uzzell (3-for-5, 3R, 2RBI) and LeBeau (3-for-5, 1R, 1RBI) recorded three hits apiece, while three others recorded at least two hits.
