Home Opener Does Not Disappoint As Griffins Ground Panthers in Thrilling 3-2 Triumph

Philadelphia, Pa. - (9/20/2019) – The Scarlet and Gold thrilled the intimate Sorgenti Arena crowd in tonight's home opener versus Adelphi University. After a 25-21 (0-1) loss to the Panthers in the opening set, Chestnut Hill College used a marathon 31-29 (1-1) victory to aid a 25-22 (2-1) win in the third set. Adelphi University evened the spread, 2-2, with a solid 25-21 (2-2) win, but the Griffins were the victors in the end as they played well off the pass of senior right side Cassie Callahan (St. Louis, Mo.) for an 15-12 (3-2) end. Freshman setter Henielys Ramos (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) was Chestnut Hill College's top performer, supplying 21.0 points in a second straight triple-double effort that included 17 kills, 17 assists, 13 digs.

Adelphi University (4-2) paced Chestnut Hill College (3-6) through the first set, gaining the edge with a 25-21 win. The second set was the thriller as the Griffins lead to a 10-10 tie. The Scarlet and Gold called a timeout down 14-13 and again at 18-14, only to tie the set at 20-20 after a pair of Panther timeouts (19-20, 23-21), another lead change at 23-23, and a seemingly endless chase pass the 25-point threshold to a jubilant 31-29 Griffin triumph. The momentum allowed Chestnut Hill College to pace Adelphi University to a 19-14 edge midway through the third set. The Panthers beat the Griffins to 20-20, but a pair of kills from junior outside hitter Corrine Kalala (Highlands Ranch, Colo.), and a third from Callahan provided all the incentive needed to take the 2-1 lead with the 25-22 set-victory. Unfortunately, Adelphi University forced the deciding set with an effort reminiscent to their opening game, 25-21. Chestnut Hill College forced the first timeout of the evening with an opening 6-4 run. The Panthers evened the set at 7-7, but again, the Griffins seized lead to a 10-7 visitor timeout. From there, it was point-for-point until twin kills from junior middle hitter Ragen Baldwin (Lancaster, Pa.) and Ramos clinched the match for the Scarlet and Gold, 15-12.

Freshman setter Brenna Valsted (Louisville, Ky.) offered 39 assists to an Adelphi University front that featured a pair of double digit kill performances. Sophomore outside hitter Victoria Bailey (Murrieta, Calif.) was the better of the two with 15 kills, two assists, two aces, two block assists, and 12 digs. The other was junior middle blocker Sophia Powless (Onondaga Nation), who totaled 11 kills, an assist, four aces, a block assist, and two digs. Senior libero Katarina Warburton (San Mateo, Calif.) captained the Panthers' defensive efforts with 25 digs.

Ramos added three aces and a pair of block assists to her triple-double performance. Baldwin was the only other Griffin over 10 kills, but strong showings from Callahan, senior outside hitter Reily Byxbee (Madison, Conn.), and senior libero Janie Green (Hayes, Va.) pushed Chestnut Hill College over Adelphi University. Baldwin finished with a dozen (12) kills, three block assists, and three digs. Byxbee offered six kills, four assists, an ace, and 20 digs. Green supplied three assists and 11 digs.

Chestnut Hill College resumes their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule on Tuesday, September 24, when they visit Georgian Court University for a 7:00 p.m. match.
