Lakewood, N.J. - (9/24/2019) – Chestnut Hill College led Georgian Court University as late as 23-22 in the opening set of this evening's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match. Unfortunately, the last three points of the frame were in the Lions' favor, 25-23, and the momentum eventually carried Georgian Court University to 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-12) win. Corrine Kalala (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) scored a team-high nine points (9.0) with nine kills on a team-best .533 (9K-1E-15TA) hitting percentage.
In a competitive first set, Goldey-Beacom College (9-3, 2-0) took a 7-1 lead before Kalala and freshman setter
Henielys Ramos (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) rallied Chestnut Hill College (3-7, 0-2) for a 13-13 tie. The score knotted again at 17-17 and was soon followed by a Lion timeout as kills from sophomore right side
Lauren Lipinski (Gilbert, Ariz.) and junior middle blocker
Ragen Baldwin (Lancaster, Pa.) gave the Griffins a brief 19-17 edge. Unfortunately, the break gave the Georgian Court University (9-3, 2-0) the rest they needed to refocus for an 8-4 closing run; 25-23 (1-0). With the momentum in hand, the Lions paced the Griffins to a 25-18 (2-0) second-set score and brought the match to a close with a 25-12 (3-0) win in the third set.
A balanced Georgian Court University offense saw six Lions record four kills or more; junior right side Kayla Wilson (Orange, N.J.) was the leader of the group with seven kills. Junior setters Ashley Pierson (Rogersville, Mo.) (16 assists) and Jaime Sweeney (Toms River, N.J.) (13) combined for 29 of the Lions' 33 assists. Senior libero Emily McCurley (Monument, Colo.) provided eight digs and senior right side Amy Bruno (Barnegat, N.J.) offered four blocks.
Kalala scored six of her nine kills in the first set and she did so efficiently with a career-best .533 (9K-1E-15TA) hitting percentage. Ramos directed the Chestnut Hill College offense with a dozen (12) assists in excess of four kills and four digs. Senior right side
Cassie Callahan (St. Louis, Mo.) as a noteworthy contributor as well, offering three kills, eight assists, four digs, and a pair of block assists to the Griffin effort.
