Griffins Capitalize on Early Scores and Mountaineer Turnovers for 25-22 CSFL Win

Mansfield, Pa. – (9/21/2019) – A pair of connections between senior quarterback Michael Marino (Blue Bell, Pa.) and senior wide receiver Domoree Hill (Bethlehem, Pa.) (10:03 1QTR, 1:44 2QTR) forged Chestnut Hill College an early 13-0 lead over Mansfield University in this evening's Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) contest. But the Mountaineers used a long rush and a pass interference to score with just three seconds (0:03) before halftime, 13-6. In the third quarter, a key fumble recovery by senior defensive back RahSaan Hayes (Camden, N.J.) gave the Griffins the ball on the Mansfield University 27-yardline. From there, a pair of completions to sophomore wide receiver Colby Goldsmith (Phoenixville, Pa.) and a 10-yard rush from Marino gave the Griffins enough separation to secure a 25-22 victory.

The affair opened with a 40-yard completion to Hill and after some headway on the ground and some pass interference calls, Chestnut Hill College (2-0) ended up with the ball on the Mansfield University (1-1) one-yard line. Two plays later Marino hit Hill for a three-yard touchdown, 7-0 (10:03, 1QTR). In the second quarter, Marino used another Mountaineer pass inference call to trigger a series of completions that ended with 13-yard toss to Hill, 13-0 (1:44). Unfortunately, a 1:44 was too much time to give the home team as an efficient seven-play drive ended with an eight-yard touchdown run from senior wide receiver D.J. McLean (Philadelphia, Pa.), 13-6 (0:03,  2QTR).

Chestnut Hill College added to their lead on their second drive of the second half as Marino hit Goldsmith twice and ran it in for the touchdown after the Hayes fumble recovery (19-6; 7:16, 3QTR). But Mansfield University used a big pass play and a 77-yard drive to come back for a 22-19 at the end of the third quarter (0:00, 3QTR). The Mountaineers held the lead until late in the fourth quarter as Marino hit Hill for a 21-yard gain before finding freshman wide receiver James Naylor Jr. (Middletown, Del.) for a 40-yard touchdown pass (25-22) with 2:40 remaining in the contest. An interception from junior defensive back Nate Moser (Bethlehem, Pa.) on the ensuing Mansfield University possession pretty much wrapped it up as Marino and crew ran out the remaining clock (2:58) with a series of rushes from senior running back Sef Penson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and another connection from Marino to Goldsmith.

Penson finished with 97 of Chestnut Hill College's 123 rushing yards. Marino was 17-of-34 (50.0%) for 254 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception. He hit Hill six times for 95 yards and two of those touchdowns. Naylor (63 yards) and junior wide receiver Akeem Browne (Elkins Park, Pa.) (72 yards) caught four passes apiece, while Goldsmith finished with his three. The Griffin defense allowed 310 yards of rushing, but came through the crucial turnovers when needed. Senior strong safety Ryan Jakeman (Cheltenham, Pa.) led the effort with nine tackles and 1.5 sacks.

Chestnut Hill College returns to A.A. Garthwaite Stadium on Friday, September 27, to host the United States Naval Academy in a 7:30 p.m. South Division contest.
