Conshohocken, Pa. – (9/27/2019) – Chestnut Hill College hosted the United States Naval Academy at A.A. Garthwaite Stadium in a Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) south division clash on Friday night. Navy, the 2018 CSFL champions, held on thanks to a strong first half for a 28-12 win.
Junior quarterback Braydan Chmiel (Warrenton, Mo.) connected with junior wide receiver Eric Spicer (St. Marys, Ohio) for a 67-yard touchdown to open the scoring for the Midshipmen (3-0, 1-0) midway through the first quarter. Chmiel tacked on another touchdown with a two-yard run with 3:33 left in the second quarter to extend the lead to 14-0. The Griffins (2-1, 0-1) got on the board before the end of the half with an 11-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback
Michael Marino (Blue Bell, Pa.) to senior wide receiver
Domoree Hill (Bethlehem, Pa.).
Navy managed to head into the half with a 15-point lead after a long drive with less than a minute to go. Senior running back
Sef Penson (Brooklyn, N.Y) kept the Griffins in striking distance with a touchdown run early in the third, but stout defense from Navy and a final touchdown pass from Chmiel late in the fourth quarter secured the win.
In his three-touchdown performance, Chmiel recorded team-high yardage in passing (124 yards) and rushing (61 yards). Spicer's 67-yard touchdown reception helped him lead all receivers with 73 yards. Senior linebacker David Postma (Bellevue, Wash.), junior defensive back Grant Hooper (Huntingtown, Md.) and freshman linebacker Paul Kuehler (Roanoke, Va.) recorded interceptions for the Midshipmen.
Marino and Penson posted team-leading passing and rushing yards for the Griffins, respectively. Hill recorded five receptions for 71 yards with a long of 24 yards on a reception. The defense, which limited the Midshipmen to a single touchdown in the second half, recorded 54 tackles, eight tackles for loss and an interception in the game.
