Eagles Use Extra Possessions To Pace Griffins in 91-62 CACC Score

Waterbury, Conn. - (1/25/2020) – Chestnut Hill College's recent good fortune came to an end today, Saturday, January 25, as the Griffins were mired behind a 61-19 rebounding disadvantage in a 91-62 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) loss at Post University. The Eagles used the extra possessions to grab a 49-31 halftime lead and pace the Scarlet and Gold by as many as 31 points, 76-45 (1:48) late in the third quarter. Sophomore forward Bri Hewlett (North Wales, Pa.) came off the bench for a team, season, and career-high 21 points. Her performance was complimented by a season-high 18 points from sophomore guard Rachael Millan (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) and a 14-point effort from sophomore guards Lauren Crim (Warrington, Pa.).
 
Post University (13-4, 8-2) paced off the opening tip, but Crim and Hewlett kept Chestnut Hill College (7-12, 6-4) close, 19-14 (2:24), until the Eagles closed the first quarter with a 10-4 run; 29-18 (0:34). Afterwards, the rebounding really came into play as Post University used the extra possessions to push their lead to 20 points, 49-29 (1:25), just prior to halftime; 49-31 (1:08). The Scarlet and Gold cut the deficit to 17 points on several occasions during the third quarter (7:07, 6:33, 6:04, 5:04), but lost control of their rally late in the frame as the Eagles' edge escalated to 31 points, 76-45, with 1:48 remaining. With Hewlett, Millan, and Crim leading the way, the Griffins cut the difference to 21 points, 83-62, with 2:42 left in the fourth quarter, but by then the closing Eagle free throws only reset the final margin at 28 points; 90-62 (0:29).
 
Six Eagles finished in double figures; freshman forward Tai Pagan (New London, Conn.) was the best among them as she set the tone for Post University with 19 points and 18 rebounds. She hit all nine of her free throws (9-of-9, 1.000) while also recording three assists and a pair of blocks. Junior guard Hannah Benac (Boerne, Texas) matched Pagan's point totaled (19 points) while additionally providing four rebounds, an assist, and two steals. Freshman center Jimmirah Johnson (Prospect Park, N.J.) also played a major role for the Eagles with 12 points, 11 rebounds, and a block off the bench.
 
Hewlett was 8-of-18 (.444) from the floor and a perfect 3-of-3 (1.000) from the free throw line in her 21-point performance. She also recorded four rebounds, an assist, and a steal. Millan was 8-of-14 (.571) from the field and 1-of-1 (1.000) at the free throw line in her 18-point effort. She also recorded also recorded two rebounds and four assists. Crim hit four (4-of-7, .571) from long range, staying hot from three-point territory while contributing three rebounds, an assist, and two steals to the Griffin effort.

Chestnut Hill College continues their CACC schedule on Wednesday, January 29, when they host Georgian Court University in a 6:00 p.m. contest.
