NEWARK, Del. (01/31/2020) – Chestnut Hill College women's tennis opened 2020 against a Division I opponent, the University of Delaware. The Blue Hens overpowered the Griffins (6-8), winning the Friday afternoon match, 7-0.
Delaware (2-0) opened the match by taking the doubles point thanks to a 6-1 win in the first flight, a 6-0 win in the second flight, and a walkover in the third flight.
The Griffins struggled to get going in its singles matches, as well. Third flight singles sophomore
Gianna Vassalluzzo (Newtown, Pa.), fourth flight singles junior
Mariana Sanchez (Trenton, N.J.), and first flight singles senior
Barbara Broville (Toulouse, France) were the first three off the court in 6-0, 6-0 defeats. Fifth flight singles senior
Nicole Yang (Blue Bell, Pa.) took a game off sophomore Viva Laas (Bonita Springs, Fla.), but fell 6-0, 6-1.
Second flight singles freshman
Carlota Garcia Arguelles (Madrid, Spain), who was part of the first doubles team that took a game earlier in the match, dropped her singles match 6-1, 6-1 to sophomore Caragh Courtney (Castleknock, Ireland).
The women's tennis spring slate won't continue for the Griffins for another month, when it hosts University of the District of Columbia Monday, March 9 and Loyola University Maryland on Saturday, March 14.
