Wilmington, Del. - (2/18/2020) – Chestnut Hill College came from 20 points back, 85-65, with 10:19 remaining to down just five points, 85-80 (7:53), just three minutes later thanks to a three-point basket from sophomore guard
James Rider IV (Baltimore, Md.), seven points from sophomore guard
Trevonn Pitts (Wyncote, Pa.), and a little bit of help from sophomore forward
Amir Warrick (Washington, DC) and freshman guard
Conor Regan (Mullica Hill, N.J.). Unfortunately, a quick Goldey-Beacom College recovery provided the Lightning the cushion needed to pace the Griffins to a 110-101 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) conclusion. Warrick led five Griffins in double figures with a career-high 28 points.
Goldey-Beacom College (13-12, 10-6) emerged from the early back-and-forth to lead Chestnut Hill College (4-21, 4-12) by 10 points, 20-10, with 14:44 remaining in the first half. A Regan three pointer reduced the spread to just two points, 26-24, with 11:06 to go. The pendulum swung once more prior to intermission with the Lightning gradually distancing themselves by 14 points, 50-36 (3:03), before a pair of Rider baskets sparked the Griffins for a 10-4 closing run; 54-46 (0:10).
In the second half, Goldey-Beacom College immediately returned their lead to double figures with an opening three-point basket; 57-46 (19:35). From there, the Lightning lead remained in double-digits until a Regan three-point basket knocked the margin to seven points, 85-78, with 8:32 remaining in the game. Just 39 seconds later, a Pitts layup further reduced the difference to just five points; 85-80 (7:53). Rider connected at 6:38 to keep the margin at five points, 90-85 (6:38), and again at 4:05 to cut the Goldey-Beacom College lead to four points, 96-92. Unfortunately, the Griffins could not get any closer as eight straight points from junior guard Tyler Jones (Lawrenceville, N.J.) momentarily distanced the Lightning by 12 points, 104-92 (2:20), in an eventual nine-point, 110-101 (0:08), final margin.
Junior guard Marcellus Livingston (Linden, N.J.) led five Lightning in double figures with a game-high 34 points. He also recorded seven rebounds, four assists, and a steal. Jones finished with 24 points, three assists, and two steals.
Warrick was 10-of-15 (.667) from the field and 8-of-11 (.727) from the free throw line, while also providing Chestnut Hill College with five rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Rider and Pitts finished with 20 points apiece; the former hit four three-point baskets (4-of-6, .667) and grabbed five rebounds, while the latter did not miss a shot – 7-of-7 (1.000) field goals, 5-for-5 (1.000) free throws – in addition to recording four rebounds, three assists, and a block. Regan (12 points) and sophomore forward
Keyon Butler (Chester, Pa.) (10) also scored in double figures, while freshman guard
Ahmad Bickley (Philadelphia, Pa.) handed out eight assists.
Chestnut Hill College returns to Sorgenti Arena on Saturday, February 22, when they host Thomas Jefferson University in a 4:00 p.m. CACC contest.
