Philadelphia, Pa. - (2/22/2020) – The grand finale of a busy Saturday on the Hill, the Griffins hosted Thomas Jefferson University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Mental Health Awareness Game with postseason implications. Chestnut Hill College paced the Rams through a low scoring first half, 23-16, thanks to nine points from junior guard
Cassie Sebold (Willow Grove, Pa.) and nine rebounds from sophomore center
Leah Miller (Punxsutawney, Pa.). In the second half, the Griffin advantage reached 11 points, 31-20 (7:33, 3QTR), before the Rams charged back to tie the contest, 43-43 (4:27, 4QTR), before scoring a 51-49 victory over the Scarlet and Gold. Sebold finished with 18 points, while Miller ended the game with a dozen (12) rebounds.
Chestnut Hill College (11-15, 10-7) led Thomas Jefferson University (15-11, 11-6) through a majority of the affair, including a 9-6 (0:05) advantage after a low-scoring first quarter, and a 23-16 (0:01) halftime lead. Sebold was able to capitalize on Miller's defensive rebounding (8), pushing the Scarlet and Gold through a poor-shooting half from both parties – Jefferson (7-of-33, .212) and Chestnut Hill College (9-of-33, .273) – with nine points of her own, four rebounds, and a pair (2) of assists in the first two frames.
After intermission, the Griffins added to their position with an 18-17 third-quarter spread. Chestnut Hill College's lead maxed out at 11 points, 31-20 (7:33), on a three-point basket from sophomore guard
Lauren Crim (Warrington, Pa.) and remained at eight points, 41-33 (0:02), heading to the final frame thanks to a late three pointer from sophomore guard
Morgan Orloski (Bethlehem, Pa.) (39-30, 1:31) and a Sebold layup that briefly pushed the Scarlet and Gold lead to nine points, 41-32 (0:21), before the contest entered the fourth quarter with an eight-point, 41-33 (0:02), margin on the second of two free throws from freshman forward Haley Meinel (Warrington, Pa.). In the fourth quarter, scoring was hard to come by for Chestnut Hill College, who gave up the lead to the Rams for the first time with 2:42 (45-43) remaining in the contest. Afterwards, a three-point basket from sophomore forward
Bri Hewlett (North Wales, Pa.) only gave the Griffins a brief 46-45 (2:28) advantage before a tough bucket from senior guard Alynna Williams (Ambler, Pa.) (47-46, 1:51) triggered Jefferson for a 6-3 closing run; 51-49 (0:06).
Williams finished with 18 points, three rebounds, and an assist. Jefferson also got 17 points, seven rebounds, two blocks, and a steal from junior forward Sabria Lytes (Philadelphia, Pa.). Meinel offered 11 points, five rebounds, three assists, three blocks, and two steals.
Sebold gritted out an 18-point performance with a 6-of-15 (.400) shooting performance that included three three-point baskets (3-of-6, .500) and three free throws (3-of-4, .750). She also recorded seven rebounds and five assists. Miller added four points, two assists, three blocks, and a steal to her dozen (12) rebounds.
Regardless of the outcome, Chestnut Hill College returns to the CACC Championship Tournament for the first time since the 2017-2018 season thanks to a Goldey-Beacom College loss at Georgian Court University (79-63). The Griffins continue their CACC schedule on Wednesday, February 26, when they visit Holy Family University for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
