Scottie Spann Jr. (Philadelphia, Pa.) recorded his second straight 20-point double-double with 22 points and 17 rebounds in tonight's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest. But Wilmington University endured Chestnut Hill College to a 96-85 final in another highly competitive conference affair as a three-point play from senior guard Jermaine Head (Edgewood, Md.) broke a 73-73 (5:55) stalemate and ignited the Wildcats for a 23-12 closing run. Keyon Butler (Chester, Pa.) was his greatest backer with 19 points and seven rebounds.
Chestnut Hill College (4-18, 4-9) led off the opening tipoff, using a layup from Butler (2-0, 19:45), five points apiece from freshman guard
Conor Regan (Mullica Hill, N.J.) and Spann to capture a 12-5 (15:05) lead in the opening five minutes. Wilmington University (7-15, 5-8) turned the tide over the next five-minute span, tying the contest two minutes later, 12-12 (12:59), and initially separating for a five-point lead, 19-14 (10:57), before a flurry a late three pointers pushed the Wildcats to a 45-32 halftime edge.
After intermission, Regan put the statement points on the end of a 20-5 Chestnut Hill College run that knocked the Wilmington University lead to a single point, 53-52, with 13:13 left to play. The contest remained close over the next 10 minutes with the score tying six times and the lead changing hands eight times before the Wildcats a three-point basket from sophomore guard
James Rider IV (Baltimore, Md.) left the Griffins within a point, 79-78, with 3:40 remaining in the game. From that point on, however, Wilmington University controlled the affair as they hit four consecutive three-point shots and got three late free throws from Head to outrun the Scarlet and Gold to a 96-85 conclusion.
Head finished with 34 points. It was his second straight 30-plus performance against the Griffins. He was 11-of-21 (.524) from the floor and 7-of-8 (.875) from the free throw line while recording six rebounds, 10 assists, and three steals. Sophomore forward Jordan Harding (Bear, Del.) offered 24 points, six rebounds, two blocks, and a steal. Freshman guard Taalib Holloman (Philadelphia, Pa.) was a major contributor as well with 20 points, two rebounds, and an assist.
Spann added four assists and a steal to his 22-and-17, while Butler added an assist and a block to his 19-and-7. Regan and Rider both finished with 14 points; the former added six rebounds, an assist, and a block. Sophomore guard
Trevonn Pitts (Wyncote, Pa.) was the Griffin in double figures, scoring a dozen (12) points in excess of four rebounds and four assists. Freshman guard
Ahmad Bickley (Philadelphia, Pa.) helped Chestnut Hill College compete with four points, three rebounds, eight assists, and three steals.
