Healey Halts Bentley University’s Late Rally to Earn Griffins 7-6 Win

SANTALUCES, Fla. (3/1/2020) – Chestnut Hill College baseball earned a series win over Bentley University by taking the final matchup, 7-6, over the Falcons (2-6) in their three-game set to open the season.

The Griffins (2-1) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead through three innings and, despite Bentley's charge in the final innings, held on thanks to a save from junior Jared Healey (Philadelphia, Pa.).

The Scarlet and Gold put up runs in each of the first three innings, with junior outfielder John Contoudis (Jenkintown, Pa.) knocking in an RBI single in the opening inning, senior infielder Patrick Meenan (Oreland, Pa.) producing an RBI double in the second inning, and a pair of unearned runs in the third off a Healey sacrifice fly and wild pitch.

The Falcons came within a run after six innings, but the Griffins rebounded thanks to extra-base hits from Contoudis and junior Grant Schwartz (Delta, Pa.) to tack in a run each. Junior Sam Barletta (Royersford, Pa.) smashed one over the right field wall in the top of the eighth to extend the Griffins lead.

After Bentley University was able to claw within a run in the eighth inning, Healey came on to pitch in a relief effort and left a pair of runners stranded by retiring the last two batters of the inning, then retired three of the final four batters in the ninth to hold on to the 7-6 win.

Chestnut Hill College continues its spring break trip with the first of a two-game set against Barry University at 6 p.m. Monday, March 2 in Miami Shores, Florida.
