Chestnut Hill College Falls in Opener against Florida Memorial University

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (3/6/2020) – Chestnut Hill College baseball (3-4) got off to a quick start, but could not keep up with Florida Memorial University. The Lions (5-11) ran away with a 19-3 win in the opening game of the teams' three-game set.

Chestnut Hill College struck first with an RBI sacrifice fly off the bat of junior outfielder John Contoudis (Jenkintown, Pa.) for his 11th RBI through the first seven games of the year. Junior infielder Jared Healey (Philadelphia, Pa.) notched an RBI double later in the inning before the Griffins tacked on a third run off the bat of sophomore Corbin Dunnuck (Mohnton, Pa.) with two outs.

Florida Memorial cut into the lead with a leadoff home run from junior second baseman Rohandry Javier and a second run in the opening inning after a runner advanced on a wild pitch. From there, the Lions took over – scoring four runs off two hits in the second inning and five runs off five hits in the third inning.

With an eight-run lead in hand, the Lions hit two more home runs and had runners cross the plate eight more times in total. The Griffins struggled to solve senior pitcher Krystian Negron, who gave up five hits in a complete-game effort to earn the win.

Chestnut Hill College will get another crack at Florida Memorial with a doubleheader, starting at noon on Saturday, March 7.
