Henielys Ramos broke six school records as the Chestnut Hill College Women's Volleyball Team earning a thrilling five-set victory over Bloomsburg University, 3-2 (25-18, 23-25, 25-23, 12-25, 15-10) Tuesday night at Sorgenti Arena.
The Griffins, winners of two straight matches, improve to 4-11 overall. Bloomsburg falls to 9-11.
Ramos became the first Griffins volleyball player to record 30 kills in a match under the current 25-point scoring system. The junior right side hitter also established new school marks for attacks (80) and points (31.0) in a match. All three of these marks are also school records for a five-set match. Ramos added 18 digs for her second consecutive double-double.
Setting the offense for the Griffins was
Mia Caporellie. The sophomore setter recorded 45 assists, her third straight match with 40 or more assists and also notched her third straight double-double with 22 digs.
Defensively, the Griffins had two players record 30 or more digs,
Venessa Caballero (32) and
Erika Dubosky (30). It is the first time in program history that two players had reached the 30-dig plateau in the same match.Â
Mikayla Grimes added 11 digs to become the fifth player to reach double figures for digs in the match.
Angela April had five blocks to lead Chestnut Hill.
The Huskies scored the first three points in the opening set only to have the Griffins answer with five straight tallies. Following another three-point run by Bloomsburg, Chestnut Hill produced an 12-3 run to take firm control of the set 17-9. Bloomsburg made a late run with five straight points to close within six 24-18 before Ramos set down a kill to give the Griffins the set 25-18 and an early 1-0 lead in the match.
In the second set, the Huskies led wire-to-wire, leading by as many as five points as play continued. The Griffins tied the set once at 12-12 on a kill from Dubosky but could not take a lead, coming only as close as one point, 19-18 before Bloomsburg eked out a 25-23 win to even the match at one set apiece.
Bloomsburg held an early 5-2 lead in the third set, 5-2 before a 6-2 run by Chestnut switched the lead back to their side 8-7. The Griffins still led by one at 11-10 before Ramos produced three straight kills to open up some distance in the score, 14-10 before taking their biggest lead at 21-14.  Bloomsburg rallied with six straight points to close within one 21-20 and forcing a CHC timeout. After the timeout the Griffins got a Dubosky kill and forced an error on the Huskies to take a 23-20 lead. The two teams exchanged points until Ramos again produced a set-winning kill to give the Griffins a 2-1 lead in the match.
The fourth set belonged to the Huskies as the Griffins struggled offensively, producing just three points while serving. Bloomsburg opened up leads of 10-3 and 16-6 before winning the set 25-12, evening the match at 2-2 and forcing a fifth and deciding set.
The Griffins regrouped for the fifth set, establishing an early 5-2 lead, highlighted by two kills from Ramos and another from
Leah Miller. Bloomsburg closed within one twice the last at 10-9 before Chestnut Hill produced four straight points (three off kills from Ramos) to bring the score to 14-9. Bloomsburg added a point off a CHC attack error and then committed a service error to give Chestnut Hill a 15-10 victory in the set and a thrilling 3-2 match victory.
