Volleyball Team Wins Fourth Straight Match with Five-Set Thriller over Felician University

The Chestnut Hill College Women's volleyball Team won their fourth straight match, taking down Felician University 3-2 (25-20, 23-25, 25-19, 18-25, 15-11) Saturday afternoon at Sorgenti Arena in Philadelphia.

The Griffins improve to 6-11 overall and 3-7 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) matches.  The Golden Falcons fall to 8-15 overall and 6-5 in league play.

Mia Caporellie recorded her 12th double-double of the season with a career high 55 assists while adding ten digs. Caporellie's 55 assists are the second highest single-match assist mark recorded in the history of the Chestnut Hill volleyball program trailing only the 64 by Emily Drew in a 2013 match against Philadelphia University (now Jefferson).  Mia's career-high game also brings her season total to 506, becoming just the ninth player in program history to record 500 or more assists in a season.  Caporellie also led the team with five service aces.

Henielys Ramos led all players with 18 kills while recording an attack% of .260 (18-5-50).  She currently leads the CACC, averaging 3.98 kills/set.   Erika Dubosky recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 15 kills and 17 digs.

On the defensive side, Venessa Caballero led all players with 20 digs, joining teammates Dubosky and Caporellie in double figures. Lauren Lipinski had four blocks while Leah Miller added three.

The Griffins jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the opening set and never looked back, increasing their lead to as many as ten (21-11) before the Golden Falcons closed the gap with a 9-2 run.  Ramos and Miller followed with kills to seal the set at 25-20 and give the Griffins a 1-0 lead.

After trailing early in the second set, the Griffins rallied to take a three-point lead at 15-12.  Felician followed with a 7-1 run to claim a 19-16 advantage before the Griffins again rallied to tie the score at 22-22.  The Golden Falcons scored on three of the next four rallies to take the set 25-23 and even the match at 1-1.

Felician jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the third set but the Griffins would not easily fold, battling back to tie the set at 10-10, getting contributions from all six players on the court as well as forcing several errors by the Felician squad.  A Felician attack error and a kill from Dubosky gave the Griffins their first lead of the set at 12-10.  With momentum swung in Chestnut Hill's favor, the Griffins gradually opened up a seven-point lead, 21-14.  Soon after Ramos produced a service ace and Miller and Lipinski blocked a Felician attack to close out the set, 25-19 and give the Griffins a 2-1 lead in the match. Dubosky had five kills without an error in six attempts in the third set.

An ace from Lipinski gave the Griffins their first lead at 10-9 in the fourth set before the Golden Falcons scored seven straight points to take control at 16-10.  The Griffins, despite six kills from Ramos in the set (no errors, 10 attempts) would get no closer than five the rest of the way as Felician won the set 25-18 to force a fifth and deciding set.

Neither team led by more than one point in the opening rallies of the final set.  Lipinski's kill tied things up at 5-5 and three rallies later, Chestnut Hill had an 8-5 lead as Lipinski added another kill and a service ace. Felician would pull no closer than two the rest of the way, the last at 13-11 before Lipinski notched her third kill of the set and Dubosky closed out the match with her fourth kills of the set, giving the Griffins a 15-11 win and the match 3-2.

The Chestnut Hill women's volleyball team is back in action on Wednesday, October 27, 2021 when they host nearby rival Jefferson University at Sorgenti Arena.  Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
