A solid defensive effort by the Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball team produced their second win in as many games as they held host Millersville University to their lowest scoring output in four years, defeating the Marauders 66-45 at MU's Pucillo Gymnasium Wednesday night.
The Griffins improve to 2-1 with the win while Millersville falls to 1-2. The Marauders' 45 points was their lowest total since November 2017 when they scored just 43 against #2 Virginia Union.
Emily Chmiel came off the bench to lead all scorers with 18 points (7-9 FG, 4-4 FT). Â
Morgan Orloski added 11 points while
Cassie Sebold chipped in ten and had a game-high seven assists.Â
Leah Miller and
Kaitlyn Carter led the Griffins with seven rebounds apiece.
The Marauders produced a six-point lead late in the first quarter before a basket from Carter and a three-pointer from
Trinity Brittingham cut the lead to one. The two teams exchanged baskets to give Millersville a 13-12 lead heading into the second quarter.
The Griffins held the Marauders to just three field goals in the second quarter as they took control of the game, outscoring their hosts 17-8 to take a 29-21 lead at the half. CHC opened the quarter with a 9-0 run to lead 21-13. Brittingham added a second three-pointer and Chmiel sank the final two baskets of the run.  Millersville's Lauren Lister, the Marauders all-time leading scorer broke the run with a layup at the 5:19 mark as the Marauders countered with an 8-2 spurt to pull within two before Orloski scored the final six points of the quarter, first with a three-point bucket and then a traditional three-point play., giving the Griffins a 29-21 lead at the half.
Lister who averaged 25.5 points for the Marauders in 2019-20, was held to just six points on the night.
In the third quarter, the Griffins connected on seven of eleven shots (63.6%) as they outscored the Marauders 21-12 to take a 50-33 lead heading into the final ten minutes of action. Chmiel scored eight of her 18 points in the period while Orloski and Sebold added five apiece.
A 9-1 run by Chestnut Hill to open the fourth quarter gave the Griffins their largest lead of the night 59-34 with 6:33 left. Millersville came as close as 18 late in the period before
Morgan Sterner ran off seven straight points in the final 2:16 to push the lead back to 25 before the marauders scored the final two baskets to make the final score 66=45.
For the game, the Griffins shot 43.6% (24-55) from the field while Millersville shot just 30.5% (18-59). Chestnut Hill held a 42-33 rebounding advantage mostly on the defensive glass, outrebounding Millersville (28-18). The Griffins bench produced 49 points and outscored MU's bench 49-33.
The Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball Team is back in action on Sunday, November 21, 2021 when they travel to face West Chester University in a non-conference regional game. Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
