Sebold Scores 1,000th Career Point as Griffins Rally to Defeat Golden Rams

Cassie Sebold made five free throws in the final 1:41 of the game and scored the 1,000th point of her college career as the Chestnut Hill College women's Basketball Team overcame a four point fourth quarter deficit and rallied to defeat West Chester University  80-68 Sunday afternoon at Hollinger Field House in West Chester, Pennsylvania.

The win, the Griffins first against the Golden Rams, upped Chestnut Hill's record to 3-1.  West Chester falls to 1-3 with the loss.

Sebold, a senior guard and the team's leading scorer for the 2019-20 season, entered the game needing 15 points to become the tenth player in program history to reach the coveted 1,000-point plateau.  She was still eight points shy of the mark as the teams entered the fourth quarter and six points shy as the game entered the final three minutes.  Sebold made a driving layup at the 2:59 mark tying the game.  The senior guard then went to free throw line three times in the final 1:41.  Sebold's first free throw in her final trip to the charity stripe (with 30 seconds left) was the milestone reaching point.  She also made the second which provided the final 12-point margin of victory and gave her 16 points on the afternoon.

Freshman Emily Chmiel poured in career-high 26 points (10-14 FG) while grabbing seven rebounds to lead all scorers.  Leah Miller scored 21 points (13-14 FT) and tied her career high with 17 rebounds (10 on the offensive glass).  In addition to her 16 points, Sebold also dished out a game-high six assists.

The Golden Rams led by four, 60-56 heading into the fourth quarter and held the same margin with 7:17 remaining.  Following a timeout Miller was fouled on two successive possessions and promptly made all four free throws to tie the game at 64-64.  A steal by Kaitlyn Carter eventually led to a Chmiel layup and a two point Griffin lead 66-64 with 5:33 left. West Chester scored the next two baskets to regain the lead at 68-66 before Sebold started the final rally, a 14-0 uprising in the final 2:59 to seal the victory.  The Griffins made eight of nine free throws in the final 2:24.

The Griffins defense held West Chester's Leah Johnson, their leading scorer to just 18 points, 14 of those coming in the second quarter and the other four coming in the third quarter.  With senior Abbey Spratt guarding her, Johnson was held to just two shots and zero points over the final 13 minutes of the game

There was a total of 12 ties and 13 lead changes throughout the game and neither team led by more than four points throughout the first half with the Golden Rams leading 44-40 at halftime.  WCU opened a six-point lead early in the third quarter which the Griffins negated with a 10-0 run.  The golden Rams scored the next nine points to lead by seven 57-50 before the Griffins shaved it back to four entering the final quarter.

For the game, the Golden Rams made 14 three-point baskets to the Griffins four while the Griffins held a 30-2 scoring advantage from the free throw line.  The Griffins also more than doubled up their hosts on the glass, with a 47-23 rebound advantage (21-6 on the offensive glass).  The huge offensive rebound led to a 21-0 scoring advantage in the second chance points category.

The Chestnut Hill College women's basketball team will play their final game before the Thanksgiving break on Tuesday, November 23, 2021 when they travel to Bloomsburg University for their third straight game against a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) foe.  Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
