The Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball team took a six point lead into the final quarter of play against host Bloomsburg University but the Huskies turned on the outside shooting to outscore the Griffins 28-16 in the fourth quarter to earn a 63-57 win and snap the Griffins' three-game winning streak.
Chestnut Hill falls to 3-2 with the loss while Bloomsburg improves to 2-3
The Griffins received double-doubles from their two front court players,
Leah Miller and
Emily Chmiel. Miller finished the game with 17 points and 14 rebounds, her second consecutive double-double. Chmiel meanwhile came off the bench to score 11 points and grab 11 rebounds.Â
Cassie Sebold added 13 points and dished out four assists.
The Griffins held a 41-35 lead as the final period began and a quick layup from
Morgan Sterner pushed the lead up to eight 43-35. Chestnut Hill still led by seven 47-40 following a basket by Sebold with just under five minutes to go when the Huskies offense started clicking, making two three-point baskets as part of an 11-2 uprising as they regained the lead 51-49.Â
Lauren Crim tied the game with two free throws at the 1:52 mark but the Huskies again were on target from outside sinking two more three-point baskets to take a 57-52 lead with 38 seconds left. Bloomsburg made six of eight free throws in the final 30 seconds to seal the win.
In the third quarter, a traditional three-point play from Sebold capped an 9-2 run that pushed the Griffins lead to eight 34-26. Following Bloomsburg three-ball, Chestnut Hill scored seven straight points to take a double-digit lead 41-29 with 2:32 left. Bloomsburg cut the lead in half in the final minutes of the third quarter with six straight points to leave the Griffins with a 41-35 lead heading into the final period.
Bloomsburg jumped out to an early 11-6 lead in the opening quarter but baskets by Miller and Chmiel closed the gap to one 12-11 by quarters end. The Huskies again increased their lead to five only to have the Griffins rally to tie the score at 16-16 following a Sebold three-ball.Â
Morgan Orloski added a three-point bucket of her own, completing an 8-0 run and giving the Griffins their first lead at 19-16. Bloomsburg countered with an 8-4 spurt to regain the lead at 24-23. Miller added two free throws in the final minute of the second quarter to put the Griffins on top 25-24 at halftime.
The Chestnut Hill Women's Basketball Team returns to action on Wednesday, December 1, 2021 when they open Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play at Holy Family University. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
