The Chestnut Hill College Men's Basketball team had their four-game winning streak snapped Sunday afternoon as regionally ranked University of New Haven handed the Griffins an 88-69 loss at Chargers Gymnasium in West Haven, Connecticut.
The Griffins fall to 5-5 overall with the loss. New Haven, ranked #10 in the most recent D2SIDA East Region poll, improves to 7-3.
Amir Warrick (Washington D.C.) led the Griffins with 24 points (9-15 FG) and seven rebounds. The senior forward also added three steals.Â
Conor Regan (Mullica Hill, N.J.) joined Warrick in double figures with 11 points.Â
Nigel Haughton (Bel Air, Md.) and
MJ Iraldi (West Deptford, N.J.) added seven points apiece. Haughton led the team with four assists.
The Chargers opened an early six point lead before baskets from Haughton and Warrick closed the gap to two 11-9 just 6:11 into the half. New haven then went on a  19-6 tear to take a fifteen-point lead 30-15 with eight minutes remaining in the half. Warrick's three-point basket at the 5:24 mark closed the gap to 11 but the Chargers went on a 12-4 run to take their biggest lead of the half at 47-28 with just under three minutes remaining. The lead swung between 16 and 19 points the rest of the half with the Chargers holding a 53-35 lead at halftime.
Warrick scored 17 of his 24 points in the second half but the Griffins were never able to significantly close the gap. The Chargers opened their biggest lead at 63-40 three minutes into the period before Chestnut Hill put together an 18-8 run over the next 8:20 to cut the deficit to 13, 71-58. This would be as close as Chestnut Hill would get as New Haven built the lead back up to as many as 21 before settling in for the 19-point win.
Derrick Rowland led four Charger players in double figures with 26 points. Davontrey Thomas added 15 points while Quashawn Lane had 14. Pierre Phillip Tavin chipped in 12 points. Lane also had seven assists.
The Chargers shot 48.5% (32-66) from the field while the Griffins shot 42.4% (25-59). New Haven made 13 three-point baskets to Chestnut Hill's six. While the Griffins outshot the Chargers 13-20 (65%) to 111-20 (55%) from the free throw line. The Griffins out-rebounded the Chargers 42-37 but committed twice as many turnovers (8-16).
The Chestnut Hill Men's Basketball team will break for the Christmas holiday and will return to action on Thursday, December 30, 2021 when they host Jefferson University in a matinee engagement at Sorgenti Arena. Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
